PLACERVILLE, CA – Early in the season, Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights didn’t really know what the future held in the way of Pure Stock racing at Placerville Speedway. With a lack of work taking its toll on his financial situation, his #92 Pure Stock was parked for several weeks early in the season, his brother Jon was busy with a new baby girl and time for everyone had become limited. Since that time, things have turned around for Tilford and Saturday night he drove to his fourth victory of the 2008 racing season.
“I have to thank everyone who helps us out our here, including my Dad and the whole family,” said Tilford. “At the start of the season I didn’t even know if I would be racing at all this year and it feels good to be back here again. The track has been trying hard to do bonus races, the car count is growing again so it feels like things are getting back to normal.”
Tilford started the feature event in sixth position and charged into the lead on the seventh lap of the race when he overtook El Dorado driver Tim Mack for the lead. Once in front, Tilford held off Mack for the win as well as Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines. Stevens continues to lead the point standings in the division and the fourth place finish will contribute to that effort. Scott Grunert of Woodland finished in fourth followed by Rick Grunert of Woodland.
In the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars on Saturday, Taylor Simas of Chico won his first Placerville Speedway victory. Simas started the event in the fourth position and charged into third place behind leader Keith Bloom and Cody Myers. Bloom led the majority of the event, surviving a close call on lap 16 when he and Myers collided.
Shortly after the collision, Bloom fell of the pace on the track surface and Simas charged into a lead he would never relinquish. At the finish line it was Simas followed by Bloom, , Brian Vermal, and Bob Newberry.
“This is my first win here and it feels great,”said Simas. “I have alowasy like racing here since we started. “Tonight was tough with the dry track but I was in the right place at the right time.”
In the BCRA Midget Division, Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill took command of the field at the opening green. Christian maintained the point for the entire 30-lap race, being challenged by veteran driver David Stoltz of Auburn. David Prickett finished in third followed by Danny Parker and Todd Miller.
“We had a good starting spot tonight and a good run,” said Christian. “But let me tell you, I don’t know what Stoltz has in that thing but that car is pretty darn fast and he got pretty close to me a couple times tonight. We had a good run.”
The Midget Lites of the BCRA also participated in the show, in this division David Engstrom too the early lead but drifted off the second turn where Richard Hoover took charge of the event. On the 16th lap Rick Holbrook brought out a red flag with a frightening crash on the front stretch, Holbrook was uninjured in the incident but his car was destroyed.
Once the event was restarted Doug Hunting of Elk Grove charged into the lead and held off the efforts of Marysville racer Chris Glass all the way to victory. At the finish line Jason Sneep finished in third followed by Cameron Beard and Hoover. For complete details of the BCRA division check out their official website at www.bcraracing.com
