NCMA Sprints - Select Series
Petaluma Speedway - Petaluma, CA
August 2, 2008
Benicia’s Billy Aton either loves dirt track racing or it loves him, as he came from an NCMA Select Series win at Watsonville last week to collect another one at Petaluma’s clay oval tonight.
The evening started with Dave Press of Foster City setting fast time. RC Smith of Biggs, and Aton within 100 of a second of Press and each other, to qualify second and third.
Three heats were held making starting positions for the Main Event. Cody Smith from Biggs, Press and Dave Ellis were the top three in the first heat. Second heat had Napa’s David Goodwill, Jeff Kendt of Antioch and RC Smith, brother of Cody, three quickest, and Marcus Hardina, Geoff Ensign, and Troy Caraway first three in the third heat. Aton had been leading, after coming from the third row, but ended up dead in the water after a parts failure in the very last lap, throwing him into the “B” Main.
Aton began on the pole for the “B” Main and never let anyone get past him. Jason McIntosh gave Aton a run and finished second, with Scott DuPont finishing third. Seven spots transferred to the Main.
Dave Press sat on the pole with RC Smith on the outside. Aton, and Bob Newberry of Oakley were third and fourth and Pleasant Hill’s Keith Shipherd started fifth. Press set a good pace and Aton had moved into second. RC Smith controlled third. The next go-round had Aton take the lead, Press still sticking with him, and RC Smith third. By then, Dan Gonderman pulled into fourth with Newberry making fifth. Modesto’s Ed Amador had the misfortune of having a fuel line cut and catch the car on fire, with a few tense moments as he got out of the car looking like a human torch. Fire suits and track safety crews do their jobs and Amador walked away. Total havoc broke loose on the restart; Goodwill was wacked from the back and pushed in front of Dave Ellis who achieved a flip or two in front of the main grandstand. Roy Fisher got caught in it and was also out for the night. On that restart, Cody Smith flew through the air between turns three and four and got the beans knocked out of him. On the final restart, Aton still maintained the lead, RC Smith in second, Geoff Ensign third, Gonderman behind and Kendt going in deep and disabling Gonderman. The race was called for time constraints but if fans were looking for action packed racing, they got their money’s worth. At the end of the evening sprints were injured but all drivers were ok.
NCMA Sprints will return to pavement as they head to Altamont Motorsports Park. David Goodwill continues to be points leader in only his sophomore year on the asphalt, but three time champion, Pat Ariaz and last year’s champion, Ed Amador continue the quest of the best on the “Fastest Half Mile in the West” nest Saturday, August 9th.
