SHORT VICTORIOUS AT CLAY COUNTY
By Eldon Butcher

Flora, IL - Aug. 16, 2008. Brady Short led all 30 laps in winning the feature event for the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series at the Clay County Speedway Saturday night. The Bedford, IN, driver scored his second win in a row in MSCS competition and is the hottest driver on the circuit right now. The 24 year old driver was in the seat of the Short Racing Maxim sprinter owned by Don Short and sponsored by Indiana Stoneworks.

Short's biggest challenge came from runner-up Chase Stockon as the two overtook traffic at the tail of the field late in the race. Stockon seized the opportunity to move his GRP sprint up to the top and outside the leader coming off turn two. A sudden yellow flag on lap 27 slowed the field. It also changed the complexion of the race!

Two other cars running in the top five had problems with flat tires. An official removed some debris from the track which was later reported to be a muffler. Some hurried infield pit activity failed to ready the cars in time for them to return to action. Jesse Cramer was the first to step out of his car. Cramer had been running third in the feature and as high as second. John Memmer, the other driver, had been battling for 4th and 5th when his tire expired. Short retained command during the final three laps.

Mike Hess of Riverton, IL, would finish third in his best finish of the season. Veteran Hud Cone claimed fourth with his 7th top ten finish of the season.. Bret Tripplett switched machines with this MSCS appearance and brought the Mahan entry home fifth. Tripplett also earned the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger Award. Six drivers improved by 5 spots or more during the race. Triplett advanced 7 spots!

Positions six through ten in the feature went to former champion Alex Shanks, Chase Briscoe in his MSCS debut, Chad Branson, points leader Kyle Cummins, and Arin McIntosh. Kevin Thomas Jr. in finishing 11th was the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award winner.

Thirteen of the 20 starters finished the event in which there were very few yellow flags. The first was brought out when Mitch Wissmiller slid to a stop in turn 4 while running in the top three. Red flags were needed twice earlier in the evening. Ricky Williams and J.C. Bland hit the outer retaining wall hard in separate crashes.

Four qualifying heat races were held for the 32 car field. Jesse Cramer, Mitch Wissmiller, Brady Short, and John Memmer won those 8 lap events with Short getting the pole by virtue of the second pill draw.

Jerry Ruble of Vincennes, IN, won the B-Main to pick up the first of the 4 remaining starting spots for the feature. Ruble had one 2008 unused provisional to fall back on but it wasn't needed. Every one of the 12 drivers with MSCS provisionals in the field raced their way into the feature and no provisional starts were used thus 20 cars started the main.

Next up for MSCS will be the long awaited visit to Twin cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, IN. The 25 lap feature will pay $2,000 to win and is set for Saturday night August 23rd. Labor Day Weekend MSCS will run at Tri-State Speedway. That race is on Sunday August 31st. September 6th will mark the return of MSCS to Clay County Speedway. Fans can catch the exciting action of MSCS sprint car racing each of the next 3 weekends.
