Schedule changes at Manzanita Speedway

(JUNE 29, 2008) --- Several changes have been made in the remaining 2008 schedule with the first change taking place this weekend. The original schedule had Factory Stocks, AMA Modlites, Dwarf Cars, Mini Sprints and Lady Stocks running Friday night with ASCS Sprint Cars and Mini Sprints on Saturday night. The Friday night show has replaced the Sprint and Mini Sprint Saturday night show with Friday night now dark.
The Sprint Cars have had few nights off this year and last Saturday night they ran their 16th race of the season. So far they have had only four weekends off and even with the cancellation this week they will still run three races this month and the ASCS also has a winged sprint car race on August 16th. The winged show is now a one day show and Manzy will be dark on Friday night, August 15. Other cancellations include the August 19 event which had Barnett Dirt Car Modifieds, AMA Modlites and Bombers.
The ASCS have five races on the September schedule with three at Manzy. Two of the races (the Hall of Fame Vintage Classic Sept. 20 and the ASCS Non Winged Western World on the 26th and 27th) are on the half mile track and they are scheduled to run once at USA and once at C.A.R.
The BRA Dirt Modifieds have only three regular season races plus their Nationals which are scheduled to run with the Late Models on November 14-15. For all practical purposes they can present the driving championship trophy to Anthony Madrid who holds a commanding lead in his quest for his third modified title, his first since 2005. Anthony, who currently ranks third in total main event wins, is 128 points ahead of the 2006 champion Jason Noll. If Madrid sat out the remaining races and Noll won all three he would still be eight points short. Through the first 11 races Madrid has scored five wins , has five other top five finishes and has yet to finish out of the top ten.
A total of six drivers have scored wins including Bumper Jones who won the Touring Series. Noll has two wins while Jay Foster, Ricky Thornton, Jr. and R.C. Whitwell have each taken a trip to the winner’s circle.
The Factory Stocks are also on the card Saturday night with the chase for the championship getting tighter heading into the home stretch. Six races remain on the schedule and the top four positions are separated by only 24 points. Two time champion Bobby Taylor holds the lead while Lyle Askren, Jr., Ron Poe and Matt Martinez are in a virtual three way tie for second.
Chris Snyder is top dog in the Desert Dwarf Cars and is hoping for a second straight driving championship. With a 60 point lead and nine points races remaining in the 2008 season Snyder cannot afford to rest on his laurels. He got off to a very slow start as he had two DNFs and a 12th place finish in the first three race. He picked up the pace and did not finish worse than seventh in the other ten laps. He has three wins and will be going for a second straight Saturday night. Brian Stehr is ranked second and his has one win and five second place finishes.
Kiley Fellers continues a march toward a first driving title in the Arizona Mini Sprint Car Association. He scored his seventh win of the season last week but he recognizes that Josh Shipley who beat him in the heat race has a very strong car. Josh did not survive the first lap in the feature. Josh Castro put pressure on Fellers for most of the race but slowed in the closing laps and Kurt Stults took up the chase.
The lady stocks will be on the card also and most will be hoping that the car they intend to drive make it through the men’s races.
Gates open at 5:30 with competitive racing slated for a 7:30 green flag.
