Reinbold survives for win in Hank Arnold Memorial at Manzanita Speedway

(June 14) The first 27 laps in Saturday night’s Discount Tire American Sprint Car Series Hank Arnold Memorial race on Manzanita Speedway’s half mile track were fairly tame. The final three laps were probably the longest and most destructive laps ever run at Manzy and led to Andy Reinbold scoring his first ever win.
Jeremy Sherman had the lead with only three laps remaining with his main adversary Charles Davis, Jr. in second with 21 of the 25 starters still running. As Sherman brought the field out for a restart following a yellow flag for a stalled car he lost power at the green flag and Davis ran over his left rear wheel, almost flipped and then was hit by cars driven by Brandon Lane, Jody Wirth and Derek Williams. That left 17 cars still running and still with three laps to go.
On the next restart Sherman slowed but then picked up the pace and held on to the lead with Mike Colegrove in second and Josh Pelkey holding third. Pelkey lost power going through turns one and two and the cars bunched up and heavy contact sent cars driven by Seainn Hendricsen and rookie driver Derek Sell flipping down the back straightaway. Cars driven by Mike Rux, Jr., Stevie Sussex, Steve Tellas, Justin Fisher, Kevin Wolfe and Thomas Ogle were also heavily damaged. Sell was transported to a local hospital with possible leg injuries.
Sherman held off Colegrove and appeared to have the race won but instead of the checkered flag the red flag waved for another accident. Sherman headed to the work area for a splash of fuel. When he was pushed out the car would not fire and he was out after leading 28 of the 29 laps completed. Colegrove took over but he ran out of fuel at the green flag and Andy Reinbold ran over his right rear but managed to regain control. The yellow was displayed to get Colegrove car off the track. Reinbold held off Jeremy Reagles for the win with Mike Martin third, Pelkey fourth after his refueling stop and R.J. Johnson fifth. Only seven cars finished and one of those was three laps down. Sherman was credited with seventh, a lap down.
Sherman started third in the 30 lap feature, had the lead before the first lap was completed. Davis, who shared the second row with Sherman, took second from Fisher on the third lap and the race was on. Sherman had the fastest car for the first half of the race but Davis put a great "Manzanita Slide Job" on Sherman and led the 18th lap. Sherman was back in front a lap later and managed to hold Davis at bay through several yellow flags for harmless spins.
Colegrove, after starting tenth put a slide job of his own to take second from Davis but Charlie found the fast groove and reclaimed second. He had his chance to take his fifth win of the year when Nathan High stalled on the track with 27 laps completed.
However that is when the destruction began.
The ASCS fielded 26 cars which ran three eight lap heat races. Johnson continued to be king of the heat races as he held of Colegrove in winning his seventh preliminary race of the year. Shon Deskins finished third ahead of Mike Leslie. The second heat went to Davis who started third. It was his third win in heat race competition. Behind Davis were Nick Aiuto, Stevie Sussex and Sell. The final heat went to Sherman who started sixth with Fisher, High and Reinbold in pursuit. The race was halted when Hendricsen fell victim to a Sherman slide job that did not quite clear his #11 car and he hit the fence and rolled. His crew had the car ready for the feature but he was part of the carnage.
Martin scored his third Arizona Race Mart trophy dash with a win over Davis, Pelkey and Hendricsen.
Josh Castro led all 20 laps in the mini sprint car main and finished 3.35 seconds ahead of the defending champion Kyle Shipley with Josh Shipley third ahead of Kurt Stults and Brandon George. Rounding out the top ten were Dennis Carrier, Dennis Parks, Mike Visser, Ashley Robella and Paul Martin.
Kyle Shipley won the first eight lap heat race with former champion Jeff Greszler second, Joshua Shipley third and Kiley Fellers fourth. The second heat went to Stults who started sixth. Falling victim to his charge were Robella, Visser and Parks. Castro showed his power with a runaway win in the final heat. His time was five seconds faster than the other two heats. Rick Shuman finished second ahead of George and Pat Wing.
Carrier won the trophy dash but failed to make the feature through his heat race. He beat the 14 car field in the 10 lap semi main with Austin Quick, Martin and Travis Keesler trailing.
Nathan High beat R.J. Johnson in both the heat race and 15 lap main event for the midgets. Only eight cars ran and points leader Terry Goodwin was out for the night after flipping in his heat race. Behind High and Johnson in the feature were Larry Gibson, Rick Shuman, Chris Edwards, Jeff Perry and Brenden Higgins.
Trailing the front running duo of High and Johnson in the six lap heat were Higgins, Edwards, Shuman, Gibson, Perry and Goodwin.
Johnson beat Goodwin and Perry in the four lap trophy dash.
