The Discount Tire American Sprint Car Series returns to its "home track", Manzanita Speedway, Saturday night with the chase for the championship heating up. Jeremy Sherman, the three time defending champion, holds the lead but Charles Davis, Jr. is riding a two race win streak that has moved him to within 38 points of Sherman’s lead.
Through the first five races each has won twice and each has four top five finishes. Sherman’s lead is due to a sixth place finish while Davis has failed to finish one race in which he was credited with a 22nd place effort. Davis has finished second to Sherman twice and Sherman has been second in both of Davis’ wins.
Nathan High has parlayed four top five finishes and the other in the top ten to rank third in the ASCS standings and is only six points behind Davis. Last year’s top rookie, Jeremy Reagles, has a second place finish and has three others in the top ten. He trails High by six points and is 24 points ahead of Thomas Ogle.
Andy Reinbold is making a strong statement as the early choice for most improved driver. Andy has finished in the top five twice and has another finish in the top ten. He now ranks in the top ten.
The Arizona Midgets and Mini Sprints are also on the Saturday night card. The mini sprints will shed their wings for the first time this year but Kiley Fellers is the favorite as he seeks to stay perfect on Manzanita’s one third mile track. He won the season opener over Dennis Carrier and then took care of business by beating former champion Dennis Parks in the March 22nd outing.
