June 15, 2008 - Torrance, CA - The 5th Annual Legends of Ascot Event, will be honoring this year’s Legends of Ascot, drivers Chuck Hulse, Billy Boat, Ned Spath, and Brad Noffsinger; Don Basile, race-night track manager, car owner Carl Alleman, and Louis Senter, car owner and founder of Ansen Automotive Engineering. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award goes to the Gardner Family. “It’s difficult to find a race in which a member of the Gardner family wasn’t in attendance as a driver, or car owner, going back to 1922 at Legion Ascot” said Don Weaver, founder of the event. “Keeping with our tradition, our goal is to preserve the memories of those great days of racing at Ascot and of the people who participated, and pass them on to future generations of racers and fans alike”, he continued.
Racing enthusiasts from all over the US and Canada have enjoyed what has now become the largest open wheel racers reunion and commemorative event in the country. The event celebrates the people involved in the 33 years of operation from 1957 to 1990, at Ascot Park, in Gardena, California. Ascot was the nationally renown premier ½ mile dirt track on the West Coast. During that period, more than 90 drivers who appeared regularly at Ascot Park, went on to the Indianapolis 500, with 11 of them winning 26 times! Past honorees include Parnelli Jones, Alex Morales, Al Unser, Bruce Bromme, Dean Thompson, Ted Halibrand, and J. C. Agajanian to name just a few.
The Legends of Ascot Annual Event draws Vintage Race Cars from all over North America. From Midgets, Sprints, and Dirt Champ cars, to Indy cars of the era, some of the most historic cars from the URA / WRA / USAC national circuit, the CRA, along with other associations have been displayed. In all, the Event averages 65+ Vintage Race Cars each year.
The event is open to the public, and gives race enthusiasts the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the best drivers of the era. Admission to the Event includes plenty of “bench racing”, the Award Presentations, auctions, raffles, an excellent buffet lunch, collectable souvenir program, the vintage racecar display, and admission to the USAC/CRA sprint car event. Every year the event sells out early, and Don suggests that attendees order their tickets to the event as soon as possible.
