This weekend the KJ Motorsports Team competed in a Checkered Flag Sprint Series sanctioned race at Charlotte County Motorsports Park in Punta Gorda, FL. This was a special Friday night, extra distance event for the CFSS.
As fireworks were scheduled in the sky later that night, Keith Butler was not going to allow fireworks on the track to keep him from victory this weekend.
A total of 18 cars showed up for the Checkered Flag Sprint Series event. This was the largest field yet this season. With the large field the number of qualifying heats was expanded to 3. Keith was in the first heat race started third. Keith was able to pass the front row starters on the first lap pulled away to win the 8 lap heat race. In taking the heat race victory, Keith also won a product certificate from Leaf Racewear. Winning the heat race also made him eligible for the Barfield's Clean Sweep Award which had grown to $500.
Between the heat and the feature the KJ Motorsports team had some changes to make. "The track is going to cool down tonight, so we have to anticipate the track and make changes to the setup" Keith said. The changes included 2 shock adjustments, a spring change and stagger change.
As the cars lined up for the feature, Keith was in 7th position. The green flag flew and Keith got a great start. By lap 3, Keith was already in position to pass the 2nd place runner. A caution on the third lap put Keith back to 3rd. As the race restarted the Keith battling for the top spots with Dakotah Stephens and David Slawiak (3 time winner so far this season). On lap 9 Keith had taken the lead and had pulled out by a couple car lengths. Keith could maneuver through traffic and gain some distance from his pursuers, but on the clear track Keith could maintain his lead over the competition. The second and final caution flew on lap 19 when Bryan Riddle spun between turns one and two. After the restart, Keith re-established his lead and led the final 16 laps and took the victory.
In winning the extra distance, 35 lap event, Keith also won the Barfield's Clean Sweep Award for also winning his heat race.
After the sixth points race of the Checkered Flag Sprint Series Season, Keith is 2nd in points with 5 top 10's, 4 top 5 finishes and 1 victory.

Operation: Race for Freedom
KJ Motorsports conducted its fourth event for the Operation: Race For Freedom program. Through this program Keith and Jennifer Butler are using the exposure of their racing team to collect and distribute needed items to United States Service Members in Iraq and Afghanistan. These items include razors, deodorant, shampoo, baby wipes, gum, baby powder, etc. They are also collecting monetary donations to defray the costs shipping these items overseas. Also names and addresses of family members and friends that are in Iraq and Afghanistan are being collected to receive future packages.
This month the Operation Race for Freedom did an off track promotion at Quaker Steak and Lube in Clearwater, FL. The event was the Sunshine Speedway Reunion. A group of racers and fans are attempting to reopen the now closed Sunshine Speedway formally in St. Petersburg, FL.
The Sunshine Speedway was open 44 years until it closed in 2004. During its operation it hosted famous racers such as Bobbie Allison, Red Farmer, Smokey Unyoke, Buzzie and Wayne Reutimann.
KJ Motorsports will continue promoting this program at their Checkered Flag Sprint Series race on August 23rd.
Based in Riverview, FL, KJ Motorsports fields the No. 19 Chevrolet Sprint Car. With Sponsorship from JB Banta Enterprises, Eagle Jet International, Gulf American Contracting, Four Star Products and Ram Engineering, the team will run a select schedule in Florida and the Southeast and and compete in national sprint car events.The program now in its 8th year utilizes racecars developed in-house and in conjunction with Shaw Racing Products.
