Springfield, Illinois – August 18, 2008…Sitting behind the wheel of a Silver Crown car for the first time since late July Campbell, California’s Bud Kaeding charged forward in the main event and scored a top five finish in the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
Kaeding has only competed on a limited basis this year with the K & N USAC Silver Crown Series and his most recent start with the club before this past Saturday came on July 23 at the Terre Haute Action Track, where he dropped out due to steering issues while running third.
This past weekend saw the two-time and defending Silver Crown champ make the tow out to the Illinois State Fairgrounds to compete on Saturday at the annual Bettenhausen 100. With his Silver Crown commitment Kaeding was unable to compete on Friday at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, which forced him to give up his lead in the Wright One Construction 360 Series.
A 26 car field was on hand for the event on Saturday in Springfield, Illinois and Kaeding kicked it off by qualifying 17th fastest aboard the BK Motorsports, MPD Racing Products, K & N Filters No. 29. It stuck the 28 year-old driver back in the ninth row for the 100 mile race and it didn’t deter him as he charged forward throughout the event and got all the way up to fifth by the finish.
Kaeding will now head back to California to compete in the Johnny Key Classic on August 29 at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. For the night he will hop back aboard the Werbach Motorsports No. 20 sprinter in hopes of bringing home the second win of his career in the event. Kaeding claimed victory at the Johnny Key Classic during his very first year driving a sprint car, which came in 1996 at the now defunct San Jose Speedway.
After the Johnny Key Classic he will make the haul back to DuQuoin, Illinois to run in another K & N Filters USAC Silver Crown Series event on Sunday August 31. Following that Kaeding will then head back out to the west coast in time to compete in the 55th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
