8-15-2008....Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino
Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico.
The ASCS Rocky Mountain Winged Sprint Series returned to Hollywood Hills
Speedway for their second visit this year.
In spite of high winds and threatening clouds all over the area, a very
good field of 33 cars turned out from five states to put on a great show.
Shortly before time for wheel packing a brief but heavy rain shower hit
the track causing about a 45-minute delay.
Once the action got underway the racing was fast and furious.
Also in the show were the Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks.
A lot of credit has to be given to the Sprint Car drivers for taking
their cars out several times to get the track in good racing condition, and they
did a great job as the track was smooth, tacky & fast.
Heat #1 saw Kaylene Verville from Avondale Arizona
driving the #52NM of Santa Fes David Burns take the win over Denver
Colorados #14 Jeff Hefner with local favorite #11W Tim West coming home in
the 3rd position. Verville
has been racing in Knoxville Iowa this year and has made limited appearances
here in the Southwest. Heat #2 had
the #40X of another local favorite Scott Box take the win over current 2nd
place ASCS driver #11 Chad Corken from Highlands Ranch Colorado with the #77 of
Pueblo Colorados Kyle Rayburn coming home in 3rd.
Heat #3 saw the #15 of Bud Goodwin who has only been out twice this year
take the win over the #35 of current ASCS points leader Derrik Ortega with the
#45X of perennial favorite Johnny Herrera coming home in 3rd spot.
Heat #4 saw the happiest winner of the night as the #99X of 52-year-old
rookie Chuck Jackson won his first ever Sprint Car race.
Chasing Jackson to the stripe was the #21P of Paul Whitehead with the #23
of James High finishing in 3rd.
The top 4 in each heat transferred directly to the main event, leaving 17
drivers to run a 12 lap semi-main with only the top 4 finishers transferring to
the main event. The semi saw the #48 of El Paso driver Shawn Sander jump out
to a big lead only to see him spin in turn two and have to restart at the back
of the field with a hand full of laps to go.
Sander was thrilling to watch as he charged through a very fast field
only to come up 2 spots short of the transfer spot. After the spin by Sander the #78 of Jody Williams and the
#22B of Jessie Baker had a duel at the front, dicing back and forth and weaving
their way through some lapped traffic. At
the checkered flag Williams nipped Baker by a few feet for the win with the #99
of Rapid City, South Dakota teenager Jacob Ossenfort coming home in 3rd
with the #99R of Kyle Rayburn taking the last transfer spot.
The 25 lap main event saw a great battle at the front between several
drivers. In the early going the
cars of Ortega, Corken, High and another teenager Colt Treharn in the #77X swap
positions several times every lap. While
the battle up front was going on the #45X of Johnny Herrera was making his move
forward from his 5th row starting position.
With more than half the race to go Herrera took the lead and ran away to
a half lap victory. Chasing Herrera
home were Ortega, Corken, High and Treharn filling out the top five spots.
The Street Stocks again had a very short field of only
seven cars on hand to run only a single heat and a 12 lap main event.
It is unfortunate that this class is struggling with car count as they
have put on some great races all year. The
8 lap heat race saw the #72 of Jeff Whyman take the win over the #28 of Cooder
Frazier who was making his first start of the year in this division.
Frazier is currently running in the Late Model division.
Chasing Whyman and Frazier to the finish was the #37 of Joey Pierce.
The main event saw Whyman make a sweep on the night with a win over the
#M7 of Belen N.M.s Cameron Martin with the #36 of Pierce in 3rd
and newcomer #39 Dave Carrell coming home 4th.
Carrell who has previously been racing on asphalt was making his first
start on dirt and did a very nice job.
The Hobby Stocks also had a fairly short field of only 14
cars instead of the normal 18-20 that they usually have.
This division ran 2 heat races, a dash for cash and a 15 lap main event.
Heat #1 was won by the #66 of Paul Jenicek with the #7T of points leader
Thomas Hayes taking 2nd and the #28 of Skimmer Leathem finishing in
the 3rd spot. Heat #2 saw the #5T of Mike Dempsey take the win over veteran
driver Phil York in the #1 with the #75 of Kenny Ford coming home 3rd.
The 6 lap, 6-car dash for cash was sponsored by Precision Concrete and
Sunrise Sweeping Services. The dash saw all 6 cars stay close the entire way with the
#28 of Leathem holding off the hard charging York to take home an extra $200.00.
The 15 lap main event saw the #12X of Gallup N.M. driver Dale Lovato that
the win over #5T Mike Dempsey with the #7T of Hayes, #1 York and #28 Leathem
filling out the top five spots.
Thanks to all of the drivers, crews, fans and staff for
sticking out a tough evening and enjoying a great night of dirt track racing at
Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood.
Here are the full results. These
results are unofficial and we apologize for any errors.
