Herrera, Ford Jr. & Hayes Take Two Main Events In Two Nights
by Bob Ingram / Beth Hazlewood

Hollywood Hills Speedway - 6-28-2008 --- Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. What started out looking like the possibility of no racing at all due to high winds, blowing dust and rain surrounding the track, ended with a fantastic night of racing with a surprisingly large crowd of very enthusiastic fans and 59 cars in the pits. The ASCS Rocky Mountain Winged Sprints had 31 cars on hand for night two of their first double header of the year at HHS. This group, led by Mr. Jim Starr and his staff had their act together and worked flawlessly with the HHS staff to put on a fast and exciting show. Special thanks to Mr. Tom VanSwearingen who worked with regular announcer Mike Bertetto on Friday night and handled the entire show by himself on Saturday and did an outstanding job. The ASCS Rocky Mountain group will be back at HHS for another two-day show the 15th & 16th of August, so mark your calendar early for this event. Also thanks to Mr. Tom Ball (Track Director) and all of the folks who work very HARD to make things look easy. Here are some of the many folks that make racing possible at HHS, Robert Shay (pit steward), Jessie Lynch (asst. pit steward), Dennis Sedlak (facilities co-ordinator), Russ Hein (chief flagman), Walt Newlin (push truck driver and all of the others who do this job), Paul Wilson (track prep and maintenance), Art Famiglie (security staff), and the hardest job at HHS our wonderful scorers, Charmaine Wheeler, Buffy Cruickshank and Aleta Hanna. And last but certainly not least the drivers, crews, sponsors, family and FANS who come out to support dirt track racing New Mexico style.

The Winged-Sprints had three heat races, a semi-main and a 30 lap main-event. All of the heat races ran green to checkered, the semi-had only one slow down for a yellow flag but the main-event was plagued by several caution periods, many of them due to mechanical failure, not crashes. Heat #1 saw Mineola Texas driver #9 Billy Page take the win over the #22 of Billings Montana’s Jerry Brey. Brey was involved in a crash Friday night that saw him do a couple of flips in turn one, causing him and his crew to have a short night and a long day getting the car back in shape to compete tonight. Chasing Page and Brey to the stripe was the #35 of local youngster Derrik Ortega. Heat #2 had the #93 of New Castle Colorado driver Bob Schaeffer take the win over the #4M of Fort Collins Colorado’s Scott Milan with the #21P of Albq’s Paul Whitehead finishing in the 3rd position. Heat #3 saw current ASCS Rocky Mountain points leader Chad Corker from Highlands Ranch Colorado in the #11 take the win over West Valley City Utah driver #74U Dustin Hall taking second and the #15 of Albq’s Bud Goodwin coming home in the show position. Goodwin is a crowd favorite as he loves to sign autographs and put youngsters and even oldsters like me in his car after the races. The 12 lap semi-main got off to a rough start for one of the two lady drivers in this division as the #36 of Billings Montana’s Michelle Dodge got turned around in turn 2 of the first lap. It surely had to be an exciting moment for Michelle as she was facing 12 oncoming high speed racers. Fortunately everyone was able to miss Michelle and she was able to continue the race. After this first lap incident the race went green the rest of the way with the #22X of Grants N.M. racer Jesse Baker taking the win over last nights B-Main winner #77X Colt Treharn from Los Lunas N.M. Chasing Baker and Treharn home were the # 78 of Rio Rancho N.M.’s Jody Williams and the #99 of Rapid City South Dakota teenager ( 16 years old ) Jake Ossenfort taking the fourth and final transfer spot into the big 30 lap Main-Event. The Main-Event got off to a heartbreaker for one of the drivers who had qualified into the race by finishing in the top four last night as the #11W of Rio Rancho N.M.’s Tim West who was scheduled to go off from the outside of the front row was not able to get his car fired off and was scored in the 20th and last position. The loss of West moved ex world of outlaw driver Johnny Herrera up to the outside front row from his original outside second row starting spot. As might have been expected, Herrera jumped out to a big lead right from the git-go with the rest of the pack battling for 2nd on back. With several yellow flags flying mostly for mechanical problems Herrera was forced to lap a couple of back markers several times. In the end Herrera was chased home by a very strong running James High in the #23 with the #40X of last weeks main-event winner taking the 3rd position. Chasing Herrera, High and Box to the final checkered was the #35 of Derrik Ortega with the #22 of Jerry Brey founding out the top five spots. Ortega’s very strong 4th place finish moved him back into the ASCS Rocky Mountain points lead after having given up that spot to young Chad Corken a couple of weeks ago. Herrera’s win tonight was his second in two nights, giving him 9 for 9 with the ASCS Rocky Mountain series this year.

The Street Stocks again had the short field of the night but as has been the case all year long these drivers put on a couple of the best races of the night. With only 10 cars on hand the Street Stocks ran only one heat race and a 15 lap main-event. The main-event was originally scheduled for 20 laps but a very serious crash on lap two led to cutting it down to 15 laps. This crash involved the #36 of Joey Pierce and the #5 of Trevor Combs. Combs car hit the turn 2 wall VERY HARD, putting both right side wheels up onto the wall and even over the wall at one point. Combs was badly shaken and took a few minutes to recover but was eventually able to walk away from the crash, however the #5 may have suffered terminal damage. This crash ended the night for both Combs and Pierce. The heat race saw the #5X of Rick Boelter making his first appearance of the year take the win over the #5 of Combs with the #76 of Mike Ford Jr. taking the 3rd spot. After the early crash in the main-event the battle was fearsome between the top four cars as they ran side by side and even 3 wide at times. In the end the #76 of Mike Ford Jr. took the win over the #5X of Boelter with the #72 of Jeff Whyman coming home third. Chasing Ford, Boelter and Whyman home were the #M7 of Cameron Martin and the #97 of Dan Jimenez filling out the top five positions. As in the Sprints with Herrera, this was Fords second win in two nights. Ford dedicated this win and last nights win to his new bride of one week the lovely Pam.

The Hobby Stocks had 18 cars on hand to run 3 heat races and a very exciting 20 lap main-event. Like the other two divisions running tonight the Hobbies ran all of their heats without a caution period and had only one yellow flag in a very competitive main-event. Heat #1 saw regular asphalt racer #27 Roger Frakes take the win over our Alaskan transplant #2 Kitty McKeown, with the #6X of Isaac Correa chasing them home in the 3rd position. McKeown nearly took her first checkered flag of the year as Frakes made a bobble in turn 2 on the final lap that put McKeown right on his back bumper, but Frakes was able to gather it up and take the win. Heat #2 had another of the Ford family take the win with the #75 of Kenny Ford taking the win over the #23 of a very competitive Randall Trujillo taking second and the #66 of the every exciting Paul Jenicek coming home 3rd. Jenicek seems to always get into a tussle on the first lap or two and take a shortcut through the infield. Heat #3 had LONG time racer Phil York in the #1 take the win over the #24 of Junior Bustillos with the #7T of Thomas Hayes hot on their heels in the third position. The 20 lap main-event was truly a WILD & WOOLY affair with so many position changes it would have taken a calculator to keep track. Even with all of the action taking place all over the track there was only one caution period and that was for debris on the track from some of the competitors mixing it up and shedding parts along the way. At the checkered it was Thomas Hayes in the #7T becoming the third driver of the night to take two wins in two days at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Chasing Hayes home to the checkers was the #23 of Randall Trujillo, the #54 of April Dutcher-Trujillo, the #12X of Dale Lovato and the #75 of Kenny Ford. This was the first time in several races that Dutcher-Trujillo has avoided having a flat tire or a lost wheel while fighting for a win.
All in all another terrific night of racing at Hollywood Hills Speedway, where the fans come out to watch a bunch of youngsters, veterans and OLDSTERS ( Phil York ) have fun playing in the DIRT. Here are the full results for tonight’s racing. These results are not official and we apologize for any errors.

Have A Great Day
God Bless Everybody
