Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. The ASCS Rocky Mountain Winged Sprints made their first appearance of the year tonight at HHS. This group brought 30 very fast and competitive cars to do battle on HHS’s semi-banked 3/8’s mile dirt/clay track. This group of competitors were possibly the finest guests HHS has ever seen, they were organized, cooperative and appreciative. Thanks to everyone who made this a TERRIFIC show.
The Sprints ran 4 heats, a semi-main and a 25 lap main event. Heat #1 went caution free with the #22 of Billings Montana’s Jerry Brey taking the win over the #15 of Albq.’s own Bud Goodwin who was making his first start of the year at HHS. Chasing Brey and Goodwin to the stripe was the #22X of Grants N.M. racer Jesse Baker. Heat #2 also went caution free with the #40X of last weeks Non-Wing main event winner Scott Box taking the win over the #78 of Jody Williams and the #14 of Denver’s Jeff Hefner. Box and Williams are both from Rio Rancho, N.M. Heat #3 was the only Sprint heat to see a single caution flag as the #24 of youngster Jordan Mattson had motor problems that brought him to a sudden stop on the front straight. This race was won by Las Cruces N.M. driver #20Z Rick Ziehl over the #45X of Johnny Herrera with the #11 of ASCS Rocky Mountain points leader #11 Chad Corken taking the 3rd place honors. Heat #4 also ran caution free and saw the #74U of West Valley City Utah driver Dustin Hall take the win over Minneola Texas driver #9 Billy Page driving an ex Johnny Herrera car with the #36 of 22 year old lady driver Michelle Dodge from Billings Montana taking home the 3rd position.
Twelve cars were scheduled to start the semi main to determine the top for spots to transfer to the Main Event, however the #24 of Mattson was unable to start leaving only 13 competitors to vie for the transfer positions. This race was slowed by two caution periods for minor spins that did not eliminate any drivers. Current 5th place points contender #77X Colt Treharn from Los Lunas N.M. took the win over the #0J of Billings Montana’s Jeremy McCune, #35 of second place points driver Albq’s Derrick Ortega with the #8 of J.C. Powell taking the final transfer spot. The 25 lap Main Event got off to a ragged start as there were two caution flags before a single lap was completed. Once that racing got under way the #45X of Albq’s Johnny Herrera took of to a HUGE lead from his 2nd row inside starting spot. Herrera was able to lap a large portion of the field and take the win by nearly a half lap. At about the halfway point there was a double rollover by the #78 of Rio Rancho’s Jody Williams and the #22 of Billings Montana’s Jerry Brey. Fortunately neither driver was injure and should be able to make repairs to their cars and resume competition Saturday night for day two of the ASCS Winged Sprint Car show. Chasing Herrera to the checkered was the #20Z of Rick Ziehl, #40X of Scott Box, #23 James High and the #11W of Tim West filling out the top 5 positions.
As has been the case all year the Street Stocks had the shortest field but put on some of the best races. The one and only heat race had the #76 of Mike Ford Jr. take the win over the #96 of Santa Fe’s Joe Smithberger with the #72 of usual front runner Jeff Whyman taking home the show money. The Street Stock main event saw the #76 of Mike Ford Jr. take the win in honor of his new bride of less that a week Pam with the #72 of Whyman coming home second and the #36 of Joey Pierce taking the 3rd position. Thought there were only 9 cars in this division, these drivers always seem to run nose to tail lap after lap in every race and put on some of the best racing anyone could hope to see.
The Hobby Stocks had 17 cars to run 3 heats and a main event. Heat #1 saw Farmington N.M. driver #75X Roger Nixon take the win over the #14 of Benny Chavez with the #9 of first time driver Tony Booth Jr. doing an excellent job coming home in the 3rd position. Heat #2 had the #23 or Randall Trujillo take the win over the #12 of Debbie Baxter with the #75 of Kenny Ford coming home in the 3rd spot. Heat #3 saw a VERY close battle between the 5 cars in the race with all 5 drivers staying close enough to throw a blanket over the entire way. In the end the #1 of veteran racer Phil York took the win over the #7T of Thomas Hayes with the #12X of Gallup N.M. racer Dale Lovato taking home the show position. The Main Event had only one caution period to slow the action. The #7T of Thomas Hayes jumped out from his outside last row start to take the lead on the second lap and was never challenged after that. Chasing Hayes to the checkers was the #75X of Nixon, #12X of Lovato, #1 of York and the #75 of Kenny Ford filling out the top five spots.
