Manzanita Weekend in Store for ASCS Canyon Region |

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 30, 2008) – The forces of the Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region will be put to the test with a pair of events this weekend at the famed Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, AZ. On Friday night, the wingless aces take to Manzanita's 1/3-mile oval for the annual Firecracker 40 event. Then on Saturday night, the ASCS Canyon Region shifts to the ½-mile oval for the Lealand Legacy, a tribute to legendary Phoenix-area racer Lealand McSpadden. After taking his fourth series win of the season with a last-lap pass in the series most recent outing on June 21, reigning series champion Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, carries a 44-point lead into the weekend double. Also with four wins this season, Buckeye's Charles Davis, Jr., is giving chase in the second position, with Yuma's Mike Martin climbing to third in points on the strength of four top-five runs in the last five events. Just 14 points behind Martin is Phoenix racer R.J. Johnson, an April 26 winner on the Manzanita 1/3-mile, with Goodyear's Nathan High rounding out the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes past Arizona state champion Josh Pelkey (Peoria, AZ), Andrew Reinbold (Chandler, AZ), Mike Leslie (Litchfield Park, AZ), Justin Fisher (Glendale, AZ) and Jeremy Reagles (Mesa, AZ). Certificates will be awarded to each of the heat race winners, with Racing Optics sponsoring heat race one, MPD Race Products sponsoring heat race two, Winters Performance sponsoring heat race three and Sunoco sponsoring heat race four. Arizona Race Mart sponsors the Trophy Dash, while Sunoco will also award a certificate to each "B" Main winner in ASCS Canyon Region action this year. Parker Store sponsors the Roll for Inversion. Both nights of Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at Manzanita Speedway are set to go green at 7:30 p.m. Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in non-wing Sprint Car racing to Arizona with a full slate of 30 nights of racing in 2008. In addition to events atop both the ½-mile and 1/3-mile ovals at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.
