Ryan Kaplan is atop the Lucas Oil Western Sprint Car Series standings as the series is idle until July 7 when it returns to action at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Kaplan finished third in Saturday’s 50-lapper at Tracy, Calif. and has an 11-point lead over JoJo Helberg, who was sixth at Tracy.
Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. earned his first series triumph in the “Open Wheel Madness” event at Tracy’s Altamont Motorsports Park, leading wire-to-wire. Three-time defending series champion Tony Hunt finished second, ahead of Kaplan, fast qualifier Nick Rescino Jr. and Greg Anderson.
Swanson thus becomes the youngest USAC Sprint Car feature winner in history at 16 years and five months, breaking the previous record held by Bryan Clauson at 16 years and 10 months. Swanson could be the one to beat when the series travels to the 1/3-mile Madera oval. His brother Kody won both USAC Western Sprint features there last year!
Equally impressive was the fact that Swanson’s victory came in only his second Sprint car start ever! He was fifth in the May 26 race at Roseville, Calif. Swanson won this year’s “All-American Driver Challenge” championship.
