(Oxnard, CA 3/12/07) Ventura Raceway returns to action, for
their second night of racing in their 2007 season, this Saturday night March 17,
at 5:30pm. The track, conveniently located just off the 101 freeway in Ventura
California, is home to the best in weekly short track dirt racing. Saturday
night we will feature four classes of adult racing and one class of Junior
racing. VRA Sprints, Senior Sprints, Sport Compacts, VRA/USAC Ford Focus and VRA
Junior Focus will be there to entertain you with great racing action from the
first heats to the final main event. With over 100 cars expected to be in
attendance it should be a night racing fans will surely enjoy.
Last week our VRA 360 Sprints opened their season with 37 cars in the pits.
The racing was fast and furious as drivers tried to get into the 30 lap feature
through four heat races and two semi main events. When all was said and done,
Kevin Kierce came out on top taking the first win of the new season with 2006
VRA Sprint Car Series Champion Luis Espinoza close behind in second place. Third
place went to visiting USAC/CRA driver Cory Kruseman. Saturday night Kierce will
be back to try to make it two in a row over the best VRA has to offer. Other
drivers expected to challenge Kierce are Greg Taylor, Wes Richardson, Steve
Conrad, Chris Wakim, Eric Severson and the rest of the outstanding VRA Sprint
Car drivers who race here on Ventura's tight 1/5 mile bullring. These 700
horsepower racers hit speeds of 70+ mph around the tight banked track.
VRA Senior Sprints are making their first 2007 appearance Saturday night.
This popular class features over 45 year old drivers racing the same type cars
as the regular 360 drivers. The only difference is their age. 2006 VRA Senior
Champion Ron Bach is back to defend his title against the likes of Wiley Miller,
Bob Alderman, Ron Butler, Steve Stasa, Bruce Douglas and a host of other fine
senior drivers. These drivers always put on an exciting show for the fans in
attendance.
VRA Pony Stocks are back under a new name "Sport Compacts". This
new title better suites the cars that race in this four cylinder series, as the
Pinto that made up the majority of the cars in the class in earlier years are
now fading into the past, replaced by Toyotas, Nissans, Hondas, Accuras and
other newer models of front and rear wheel drive sedans. Last year's champion
Jack Hoyt returns to defend his title against the rest of the field. Last season
each race was won by a front wheel drive car. Can a rear wheel drive car come
back and win this season? Only time will tell.
Our final adult class for Saturday night will be the VRA/USAC Ford Focus
Midgets. Powered by a Ford Focus motor, these self starting midgets put on many
exciting races in 2006 and they are back to continue this tradition. Bobby
Michnowicz will try to defend his 2006 championship against a field of excellent
young challengers that includes Chris and Cameron Veach, Quinton Crye, Jenna
Frazier and many other outstanding up and coming drivers.
The last class on tap for this Saturday is our VRA Junior Focus Class. This
class is for drivers 13-16. They race the same cars as the regular Ford Focus
racers with the exception of having to put restrictors in their injector stacks
to reduce their horsepower output. Last year Robbie Josset took the first VRA
Championship. He will be moving to a regular Focus ride in 2007 just as soon as
he turns 16 year of age. Several new drivers are expected to be here to get the
series off to a great start for 2007.
Ventura Raceway front gates open this Saturday night at 3:30pm with warm ups
at 4:00pm and first racing getting under way at 5:30. For anyone coming from any
