MAY 14, 2007 --- The 37th running of one of America’s classic Sprint
Car races is scheduled Saturday at the Terre Haute Action Track as the “Tony
Hulman Classic” unfolds at the storied 1/2- mile dirt Indiana oval.
Defending race winner Daron Clayton of Sikeston, Mo. and former winners Jon
Stanbrough, Levi Jones and Dave Darland are expected to compete in th event but
it appears CaryFaas’ record of three race wins is safe from challenge.
Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif., who set a World’s Sprint Car qualifing
record at Iowa Speedway last year, is the Lucas Oil National Sprint Car point
leader, 20 ahead of Kevin Swindell. Jones and Darland rank third and fourth
entering Saturday’s race.
Jones, of Olney, Ill., might be the early race favorite after he scored a
last-lap victory over Brady Bacon in the 2007 dirt opener at Lawrenceburg (Ind.)
Speedway.
Clayton raced to spectacular back-to-back victories at Terre Haute last
October. He has three career USAC wins and although he hasn’t cracked the
“top-10” yet this season, three of the four 2007 races have been on the
pavement.
