APRIL 23, 2007...Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. will shoot for his
fourth “Border Wars” championship this weekend when the Lucas Oil National
Sprint Car Series visits Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway Friday night and the
Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio Saturday night. Hines won the 1999, 2002 and
2003 titles and could tie Brian Tyler as the only four-time champs.
Hines won the 2002 & 2003 titles but will have to contend with defending
“Border Wars” Champ Jerry Coons Jr. as well as a host of other top
championship prospects, including teammate Levi Jones, who won Saturday
night’s 2007 Lucas Oil National Sprint Car opener at Lawrenceburg (Ind.)
Speedway.
Jones scored what might have been the closest victory in USAC’s 53-year
history as he came from behind to beat Brady Bacon by less than ten-thousands of
a second. Bacon led the first 29 laps of the race in his Kasey Kahne entry
before yielding to Jones’ Tony Stewart Racing Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops
Maxim/Chevy. Trailing Jones and Bacon at the finish were Kevin Swindell, Robert
Ballou and Josh Wise.
Marc Jessup of Camby, Ind. earned his initial USAC National Sprint Car
victory Sunday afternoon at the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, leading the final 24
laps of the “Rich Vogler Classic” in his Keith Kunz Motorsports Advanced
Racing/Sander Engineering Beast/Speedway Dodge. Dave Steele finished second,
followed by Darren Hagen, Hines and Eric Gordon. Dave Darland led the opening
six laps but was seventh at the checkered flag.
Kevin Swindell of Germantown, Tenn. enters this week’s “Border Wars”
races as the Lucas Oil National Sprint Car point leader after his third and
sixth-place finishes this past weekend. He has a two-point edge over Jones.
Former champions of the two-race “Border Wars” series include Tony
Stewart (1995), Brian Tyler (1996-1997-1998 and 2000), Hines (1999, 2002-2003),
J.J. Yeley (2001), Jay Drake (2004-2005) and Coons (2006).
