LOYET, DeMARTINI & SHERIDAN TOP INTERNET “MOST POPULAR DRIVER” POLL
|
JANUARY 18, 2007...Following an open internet canvas, USAC racing fans have made their votes count for the inaugural USAC Most Popular Driver awards.
In the end, Brad Loyet (National), Matt DeMartini (Western) and Danny Sheridan (CRA) earned the most votes in their respective categories to win the first-year awards.
Loyet, of Sunset Hills, Mo., was one of 25 National drivers to garner votes, beating out Aaron Pierce of Phoenix, Ariz., whose fans made a last-ditch effort to try to get the two-time USAC Silver Crown Series feature winner into the lead. Ironically, Loyet and Pierce will be honored as the Most Improved Drivers in the Silver Crown and National Midget Car Series.
Loyet finished seventh in the National Midget Car Series point standings, and led 47 of the 50 laps at Concord Motorsports Park in North Carolina before finishing a career-best second.
Rounding out the Top 5 in National drivers were 2005 National Sprint titlist Levi Jones, Daron Clayton and 2006 National Midget champion Jerry Coons Jr.
First-year driver DeMartini of Antioch, Calif. jumped into the Western Sprint Car Series in 2006, and had enough fans to edge Western Sprint champion Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif. in the voting. DeMartini competed in 11 of the 14 Western Sprint races, capturing a career-best second in the season opener at Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway.
Trailing DeMartini and Hunt in the voting were Greg Anderson, 2005 Western Sprint champion Kody Swanson and 2004 California North Focus titlist Bradley Galedrige. Eighteen drivers received votes as the Western MPD.
Sheridan made his early votes count to beat David Cardey of Riverside, Calif. in the CRA voting. The Santa Maria, Calif. native Sheridan finished the 2006 CRA season fifth in the point standings after scoring his first victory of the season. Cardey was competing in his first full season with the series. However, Cardey’s fans were insistent his nickname, “Dynamite,” be the most popular nickname.
Series champion Cory Kruseman, 2005 champ Damion Gardner and Rickie Gaunt finished third, fourth and fifth in the voting. Overall, 11 drivers received votes in CRA voting.
Fans were given the opportunity to vote for drivers, whom had to compete in at least 51 percent of one of six series (Silver Crown, National Sprint, National Midget, Western Sprint, Western Midget and CRA Sprint) in the three categories starting Dec. 1, 2006 thru the end of Dec. 21. Only one vote per email address was counted.
