Santa
Maria, CA - August 18, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars,
IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets and Mini Stocks were in action
Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
*For
a time the 30-lap Bandit Sprint Car feature event looked like the Albert Pombo
show. The Easton driver broke on top at the drop of the green and led the first
four circuits before being overtaken by Bakersfield's Rusty Carlile. Then, on
lap 20, Pombo went back to the front and was pulling away until he brushed the
wall on lap 24. His mount slowed, allowing several cars to get by, including
eventual winner Greg Brag of Visalia. At the same time, a red flag came out when
Santa Maria's Bill Jones lost a wheel in the south turns, keeping Pombo from
dropping further than sixth in the field. Pombo was able to recover for a fourth
place finish while cousin Davey Pombo, of Kerman, was able to come on for a
second place finish behind Brag. Carlile held on for third and Atascadero's Greg
Porte, who set fast time of 13.973 second averaging 85 mph, was fifth. Carlile,
Camarillo's Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. and Visalia's Jace VanderWeerd won 8-lap heat
races.
*Clay
Daly, of Watsonville, scored his first victory of the season at SMS in the
25-lap IMCA Modified main event. Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick picked up the lead
from Santa Maria's Ron Wiley on the fourth circuit and held the point for 10
laps before giving way to Santa Maria's David Addamo. Addamo appeared headed for
his first victory of the season at the Speedway when Daly made an outside move
in the final turn of the final lap to score the victory. Addamo was a close
second, followed by Paul Stone, Rich Denman, of Coalinga, and Joey Claborn of
Santa Maria. Kirkpatrick had a problem on the second-to-last lap and wound up
13th. Kirkpatrick, Doug Thornton and Danny Lauer, both of Santa Maria, captured
8-lap heat races. Point leader Tim Breshears, of Santa Maria, won the 10-lap
semi main.
*Tim
Randolph swept the Super Street division, easily winning the 8-lap heat race and
the 20-lap main event. The Santa Maria driver, who gave up the local points lead
when he opted to run the East vs. West event at Bakersfield Speedway instead of
the local points race back on August 4, gained 10 markers on point leader Tom
Breshears of Santa Maria who placed fourth. Elton Shaffer, of Santa Maria, and
Cole Milton, of Nipomo, were second and third, and August 4 feature winner Kyle
Heckman, of Nipomo, was fifth.
*Point
leader Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, was back in championship form in the Mini
Stocks, snaring his sixth 20-lap feature victory of the season, after finishing
out of the winner's circle two races in-a-row. Second place went to Nipomo's
Justin Marsh with Atascadero's Aaron Cervantes, Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett
and Santa Maria's Pat Fausel filling out the top-five. Santa Maria drivers Bill
Jewell and Frank Nyback captured 8-lap heat races.
*Next
Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and

other in a race of their own. Tickets will cost $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for
seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is
