Santa Maria, CA - August 11, 2007...USAC/CRA 410
Sprint Cars scorched the 1/3-mile oval at Santa Maria
Speedway Saturday night. NMRA TQ Midgets and Mini Stocks
joined the sprinters for a wild night of short track
racing. Along with the serious racing the Western Racing
Association Vintage Midgets and Sprints were on hand to
provide some exhibition racing for the fans.
*Local driver Danny Sheridan, of Santa Maria, took
the lead from the outside of row one in the 30-lap
USAC/CRA Sprint Car feature event. Sheridan was able to
hold the top spot until the 23rd circuit when Temecula's
Mike Spencer took over the lead. Sheridan's night then
took a turn for the worse when he was forced to pit with
two flat tires. Spencer, who set fast time of 13.631
seconds, averaging nearly 88 miles-per-hour, went on to
win for the second time this season at Santa Maria.
Norco's Tony Jones came through with the runner-up spot
followed by Danny Faria, Jr. of Tipton. Ricky Gaunt, of
Riverside, and Rip Williams, of Yorba Linda, filled out
the top-five. Gaunt, Blake Miller, of Yorba Linda, and
Miles Bishop, of Escalon, captured 10-lap heat races.
*Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, set fast time of 15.455
seconds for the NMRA TQ Midget division but had to
settle for second in the 25-lap main event behind Randy
Moody of Ventura. Chuck West, of Clovis, who won the
July 7 feature at SMS, came home third, followed by
Camarillo's Bruce Hiroshima and Moorpark's West Evans.
Eight-lap heat races were won by West and Hiroshima.
*Santa Maria's Frank Nyback won his 8-lap heat race
and then went on to capture his second career 20-lap
Mini Stock main event and his first of 2007. Justin
Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, picked up an important point
by winning his heat race and then finished second in the
feature, just ahead of point leader Ken Kehs, of Arroyo
Grande, to edge closer to Kehs in the championship
points race. It was an eventful race for the point
leader who was turned into the turn three wall early in
the event, and had to work his way back to third from
the rear of the 18-car field. Santa Maria's Mike Weigel
placed fourth, and third in points, Justin Marsh of
Nipomo, was fifth.
*Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty
Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten
Super Streets and Mini Stocks will see action. Admission
prices will be $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors
(65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. SMS
is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on
Hutton Road.
