Santa Maria, CA -
July 14, 2007...USAC/BCRA Midgets, Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint
Cars and NMRA TQ Midgets wowed the crowd Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
*Garrett Hansen, of Manhatten Beach, started seventh in a 24-car starting
grid and methodically worked his way through the field to overtake early leader
Robby Flock, of Murrieta, for the win in the 30-lap main event. Flock held on
for the runner-up spot, followed by Pasadina's Josh Lakatos, Elk Grove's Johnny
Rodriguez and Chris Rahe of Placentia. Scott Pierovich, of Alamo, and C.J.
Serna, of Palm Desert, won the 8-lap heat races and Jerome Rodela, of El Monte,
set fast time of 14.086 seconds for an average time of about 85 miles-per-hour.
*The Bandit Sprint Car main was marred by two red flags, the first on lap one
when Jeff Fiscus flipped coming out of turn two and came to rest against the
back chute crash wall, and the second when Mike Larsen had the same type of
experience on lap 19, in the north turns. Both Nipomo drivers walked away. The
results in the race were the same as they have been on four other occasions in
2007 with Visalia's Jesse Mack finding himself in the winner's circle at the end
of 30 laps. This time Mack started 5th in the field and passed early leader John
Niggli, of Tulare, for the win. Albert Pombo, of Easton, also got by Niggli to
finish second. Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, placed fourth and Richard
VanderWeerd, of Visalia, fifth. Thompson, VanderWeerd and Dan Faria, Jr., of
Tipton, all won 8-lap heat races. Fast time of 14.417 seconds was set by Myles
Bishop of Escalon.
*NMRA TQ Midgets put on their usual display of nearly non-stop action in
their 25-lap feature event. Camarillo's Bruce Hiroshima led the first lap, but
from lap two on it was all Chuck West of Clovis. When the checkers waived it was
West in front with June 16 feature winner Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, second and
May 5 main event winner Randy Moody third. Hiroshima dropped to fourth at the
finish and rookie Jonathan St. Clair was fifth. Hiroshima and Moorpark's West
Evans captured 8-lap heat races and Wiley set fast time of 15.497 seconds,
averaging just over 77 mph.
*Next Saturday night Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, East vs. West Super
Streets and Factory Stocks return to action. Admission will be $14.00 for
adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free.
Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on
Hutton Road.
