Santa Maria, CA - June 30, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit
Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks brought plenty of
excitement to race fans at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
*Davey Pombo, of Kerman, left nothing to doubt as he swept the board in the
Bandit Sprint Car division setting fast time (14.028 seconds), winning an 8-lap
heat race and the 30-lap "A" main event. It took Pombo eight laps to
catch and pass early leader Dwayne Marcum of Fresno. From there it became a
three car race between Pombo, point leader Jesse Mack, of Visalia, and Davey's
cousin Albert Pombo of Easton. Albert held onto third place until seven laps
from the end when John Niggli, of Tulare, slipped by. At the checkers it was
Davey Pombo in front, Mack second, Niggli third, Albert Pombo fourth and Jimmy
Thompson, of Grover Beach, fifth to move to second in points. Other heat race
winners were: Joey Layman, of Atascadero; Mike Knopf, of Santa Maria; and,
Marcum. The 10-lap "B" main event went to Zak Hawthorne of Los
Angeles.
*The 25-lap IMCA Modified feature event had so many yellow flags, for various
reasons, that the event was shortened to twenty laps. When the smoke cleared,
Rich Denman, of Coalinga, was in front for his first victory of the season with
Santa Maria's Danny Lauer second and Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber third. Santa
Maria's Josh Vogt and Joey Claborn were fourth and fifth. Claborn captured an
8-lap heat race as did Kenny Kirkpatrick of Nipomo.
*Factory Stocks showed up with one less car than the sprinters, twenty-six.
They too needed a "B" main to set the field for the 20-lap
"A" main event. Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, chased Nipomo's
Chris Crompe for seventeen circuits before taking over the lead. Santa Maria's
Dave Thompson fought Graham hard for the remaining laps but had to settle for
second. Third went to Santa Maria's Michael Frazier, fourth to Crompe and fifth
to Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson. Linson's top-five came by virtue of a victory
in the 10-lap "B" main. Thompson, Tim Bennett, of Santa Maria and Ray
Pezzi, of Terra Bella, captured the 8-lap heat races.
*After running well all season, but not long enough to finish most of the
20-lap feature events, Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, finally put it all together to
win his first career Mini Stock main event. Marsh took the lead from Arroyo
Grande's Justin Crockett on lap five of the 20-lap event, and then had to fight
off point leader, and four-time winner, Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, to notch the
victory. Crockett got by Kehs on the final circuit to place second, with Kehs
third, Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, fourth and Mike Weigel, of Lompoc, fifth.
Marsh and Kehs won 8-lap heat races.
*Next Saturday night Santa Maria Speedway presents Late Model Stocks, IMCA
Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks. The Ira's Bike Shop of Arroyo Grande
bicycle races for kids will also be on the schedule. Admission prices will be
$14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and
under free. SMS is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton
Road. ******
