Santa Maria, CA - June 23, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit
Sprint Cars, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets, Mini Stocks and BCRA Midget
Lites combined with California Lightning Sprints brought plenty of racing
action to Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
*Point leader Jesse Mack, of Visalia, took the early lead in the 30-lap
Bandit Sprint Car feature event and held the lead for 13 laps before being
passed by Camarillo's Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. Hugging the bottom groove,
Rodriguez drew the yellow flag twice to be warned about cutting the track by
going below the berm that separates the racing surface from the apron of the
race track. The low groove was fast but the high groove proved to be quicker
and Rodriguez was repassed by Mack on the 19th circuit. Greg Porte, of
Atascadero, and Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, also got by Rodriguez,
leaving the order at the finish: Mack, Porte, Thompson and Rodriguez. Ron
Wade, of Bellflower, came home fifth. It was Mack's fourth victory of the
season. Eric Severson, of Torrance, set fast time of 15.263 seconds and won an
8-lap heat race. The other heat race winners were Porte and Wade.
*The 25-lap Super Street main event was a wire-to-wire win for Santa
Maria's Tim Randolph, his second of the season. Two more Santa Maria drivers,
Joey Silva and Tom Breshears placed second and third, followed by Nipomo's
Kyle Heckman and Santa Maria's Elton Shaffer. Shaffer and Heckman captured
6-lap heat races.
*It took just five laps for point leader Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, to
pass Lompoc's Mike Weigel for the lead in the 20-lap Mini Stock feature event.
From there it was an easy drive for Kehs to his fourth main event win of the
season. Second in points, Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, finished second
in the event and Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, had his best result of the season,
placing third. Fourth was Ben Caswell, of Santa Barbara, and fifth went to
Weigel. The 8-lap heat races were taken by Greg Noah, of Arroyo Grande, and
Justin Marsh of Nipomo.
*BCRA Midget Lites ran a combined event with California Lightning Sprints
that produced a 27-car field for the night's racing program. The cars are
scaled down open wheel race cars that look like winged midgets and sprints.
They are powered by motorcycle engines and, due to their wings and light
weight, are actually able to turn faster times than the 360 sprints. Fast time
for the division was a 13.615 set by El Cajon's David Bezio. Bezio, Donny
Gansen, of Rialto, Sam Corso, of Ripon, and Cristen Stover, of Alpine, all won
8-lap heat races but had problems in the 20-lap feature. Bezio and Gansen took
each other out early in the run, Corso took himself out while battling for the
lead, and Stover had to settle for eighteenth, after leading from lap 13 to
the final circuit when he suddenly lost drive. Bakersfield's Rob Ely looked
like he would take the win but Marysville's Chris Glass had just enough to get
by for the surprise victory. Ely was second; Jarrett Kramer, of Spring Valley,
third; Mike Valentine, of Canyon Lake, fourth; and, Dallen McKenney, of
Clovis, fifth.
*Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA
Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks will be in action on the 1/3-mile
oval. Tickets prices will be $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+),
$3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile
north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road. ******
