Santa Maria, CA - June 2, 2007...Century 21
Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds,
Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks competed Saturday night
at Santa Maria Speedway.
*Visalia's Jesse Mack stretched his lead in the
Bandit Sprint Car point standings with his third 30-lap
feature win of the season on the 1/3-mile oval. Two
frightening incidents brought out red flags during the
event, one when the left rear wheel came off Thad
Bennett's mount coming out of turn four sending him into
a series of flips, and the other when Eric Severson
caught fire rounding the south turns engulfing the
cockpit in flames. Both drivers walked away. Mack had to
fight-it-out with Greg Porte, of Atascadero; Jimmy
Thompson, of Grover Beach; and, Ron Wade, of Bellflower,
for the win. Porte, Thompson and Wade finished second
through fourth, with Joey Layman, of Atascadero, fifth.
Severson did a lap just over 80 mile-per-hour to set
fast time of 14.777 seconds. Eight-lap heat races were
won by Mack, Porte and Thompson.
*After coming close last weekend, Santa Maria's Danny
Lauer held on to win the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature
over Tim Breshears, of Santa Maria, and Randy McGraw of
Ojai. It was Lauer's first main event victory at SMS.
Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber and Nipomo's Kenny
Kirkpatrick completed the top-five. McGraw and Joe
Weaver, of ventura, captured 8-lap heat races.
*Factory Stocks had a multi-car wreck on the front
chute that took out point leader Kirk Morgan, of Santa
Maria, along with others. Morgan was scored twentieth in
the 22-car field, while Santa Maria's Dave Thompson
dominated the field for the second week in-a-row to
claim the win in the 20-lap main event. Second went to
Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, followed by Kevin
Linson, of Arroyo Grande; Glen Sparks, of Santa Maria;
and, Chuck Barfoot of Pismo Beach.Thompson, Gary
Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, and Tim Bennett, of Santa
Maria, won 8-lap heat races.
*Mini Stocks had their own 20-lap shootout between
point leaders Ken Kehs and Justin Crockett, both of
Arroyo Grande, and Rob Gilbertson of Santa Maria.
Gilbertson was looking for his first career victory but
Kehs and Crockett were going to make him earn it. And,
earn it he did, starting sixteenth in the 18-car field
and taking the lead for the first time on lap seven. It
appeared Gilbertson's first feature victory would elude
him when Crockett went to the point on the 13th circuit.
But, Gilbertson wasn't through, repassing Crockett on
lap 17 for the win. Kehs also got by Crockett for second
place leaving Crockett to finish third. Fourth was Frank
Nyback, of Santa Maria, and fifth Matt Sweeney of Van
Nuys. Kehs took one 8-lap heat race and Santa Barbara's
Ben Caswell the other.
*Next Saturday night Late Models, IMCA Modifieds and
Mini Stocks return to the Speedway, joined by the second
local round of the East vs. West Super Street Stock
Series pitting Santa Maria Super Streets against their
Bakersfield counterparts. Ticket prices will be $14.00
for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children
6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located
1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton
Road.
