Jesse Mack Wins At Santa Maria
By Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - May 12, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets and Mini Stocks invaded Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night. *Jesse Mack stunned the Bandit Sprint Car division for the second race in-a-row to take the 30-lap main event. The Visalia driver started seventh in the field and took ten laps to pass early leader Thad Bennett of Santa Maria. Easton's Albert Pombo also passed Bennett to finish second. Mike Knopf, of Santa Maria, and Jason May, of Taft, finished fourth and fifth. Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, set fast time of 14.510 seconds (82 mph average) and May and Michael Baker, of Santa Maria, won the 8-lap heats.

*IMCA Modifieds had numerous yellow flags before defending champion Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, arrived at the checkers first in their 25-lap feature. After several different leaders held the point, Bakersfield's Larry Hood took control of the event on lap thirteen. Hood held the lead until two laps from the end when Reeves finally made the pass for the win. Hood was then disqualified from second place for failing to report to the scales for a post-race weigh-in. The ruling moved Watsonville's Clay Daly to second place, follwed by: Rich Denman, Coalinga; Chad Weber, Arroyo Grande; and, Chet Reeves, Bakersfield. Hood, Daly and Weber each won an 8-lap heat race.

*A three-way battle between Atascadero's Tom Grzincic and Santa Marians Tom Breshears and Joey Silva highlighted the 20-lap Super Street main. When the checkered flag had waived, Grzincic had edged out Breshears with Silva third. Chad Shaffer and opening night point leader Tim Randolph, both of Santa Maria, completed the top-five. Breshears' runner-up finish moved him into the point lead by one over Randolph and three over Grzincic. Randolph and Grzincic captured 8-lap heat races.

*Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, was headed for his second consecutive victory in the 20-lap Mini Stock feature event before traffic got in his way. With the white flag flying another A.G. driver, Justin Crockett, picked the better way through the log-jam to take the win. Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, came in third with Santa Barbara's Ben Caswell and Santa Maria's Rob Gilbertson fourth and fifth.

*Next Saturday night Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks will take to the 1/3-mile clay oval. Admission prices will be: adults $14.00; seniors (65+) $10.00; children 6 to 12 $3.00; five and under free. Gates open at 3:00 p.m. with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.
