AUGUST 27, 2007 --- Defending K & N USAC Silver Crown Champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. finished fourth in last year’s “Ted Horn 100” at the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds. He hopes to move up a few spots this time around as he tries to protect his lead in the current standings.
Kaeding is only 26 ahead of Wayne Reutimann Jr. and 43 ahead of Tim Barber entering Sunday night’s 100-miler at the beautiful 1-mile dirt oval. Four other drivers have a mathematical chance at unseating Kaeding as the new leader, but a strong showing should enhance Kaeding’s chances at repeating his 2006 title.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, Miss., not currently in the top-10 in the points, could be the man to beat, though. Stenhouse won the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at Springfield, Ill. two weeks back and he is the replacement driver for last year’s “Ted Horn 100” champion, Tracy Hines, in the Tony Stewart Racing stable. Stenhouse’s teammate at DuQuoin is Illinois driver Levi Jones.
Drivers will be aiming at Tyler Walker’s 1-lap track qualifying record of 123.550 mph when time trials open.
Johnny Parsons, who scored a sixth-place finish at Springfield, holds the 100-mile race record of 107.047 mph. Parsons, whose initial DuQuoin appearance came 35 years ago, has started 24 Silver Crown races at DuQuoin and won the “Ted Horn 100” in 1992 and 1995. In 1990 he was leading with eight laps to go when he broke a driveline. Sunday’s race would be his 25th at the Magic Mile! It would also be a series-leading 149th career start for the 1976 and 1989 series runner-up and 12-time Indianapolis 500 veteran.
