NOVEMBER 12, 2007 --- Likable Peter Murphy reaped the benefits as SCRA’s 360 non-winged champion when he collected $3,000 in year-end bonus pools at the third Annual Awards Banquet held in Hanford (CA) on Saturday night.
Murphy’s share of the huge $9,150 point fund (distributed to the top ten in points) was a healthy $2,200, but added another $800 to his coffers as champion of the Riddell Construction Passing Masters Dash series. This separate series fund, available to the top five finishers in Dash points, totaled $2,000.
In addition to the two point funds, all drivers in attendance at the banquet shared in the various sponsor provided contingency prizes totaling over $9,000, bringing the total dispersed during the evening to a whopping $20,150.
Murphy was also presented with a large trophy and a beautiful 18 x 24 framed action photo showing his Tachi Palace sponsored car in a “full-lock slide.” Car owner Tom Tarlton received a duplicate trophy and framed photo that he stated will be proudly displayed in his new construction company building in nearby Fresno. During post party interviews, Murphy was obviously delighted with the outcome of the season. “It was a great year and I’m really proud to be the SCRA 2007 champion.” And well he should be! Murphy captured six features, finished in the top five in 15 of the 16 events and added six heat race victories
Davey Pombo was next on the money list, acquiring $1,600 for finishing second in the series and $500 from the Dash series. Additionally, he received the inaugural DAVE WARD FAST TIME MEMORIAL AWARD, presented to the driver recording the most quick-qualifying times. Pombo tripped the clocks for fast time on four occasions.
Sixteen-year-old Justyne Hamblin received Rookie Of the Year honors after finishing sixth in points. She recorded four heat race wins, ten top-ten feature finishes, and recorded one quick qualifying time on her way to the honor.
Richard Harvey Jr., who celebrated his 25th year of driving sprint cars, received the Sportsman Of the Year Award, voted by his peers.
SCRA memorialized Jim Turner, who was tragically killed during the final weekend of competition. His parents, Jerry and Nedra Turner, were presented with an 18 x 24 mounted photo of Jim in action and received warm support from those in attendance.
