SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 --- With only three events remaining in SCRA’s 360 non-winged Sprint series, Davey Pombo is desperately trying to find a way to catch point leader Peter Murphy. He currently trails by 78 points, 937 to 859.
Each event offer a maximum of 80 points to a driver, 10 for fast qualifier, 10 for winning a Heat race, and 60 points for the 30-lap feature. Points are awarded to the remaining competitors on a sliding scale so Pombo has to “fair well” in at least one of the next two shows (Sept. 15 and 28th), and have Murphy completely falter in one, to get within reaching distance for the finale on September 29th at Kings Speedway.
Third through fifth-place drivers Rusty Carlile (750), Jeff Gardner (697) and Jonathan Logan (633), would need miracles to overtake the high-flying Murphy and Pombo, but their battle for the season-long third place points fund is hot and heavy. Carlile has been consistent throughout the season, Gardner has been getting stronger each show and Logan looks to regain the form that led him to the 2006 series championship.
They, along with a talented field of teenage rookies including Justyne Hamblin, John Niggli and Myles Bishop, who almost won last Saturday’s feature, will continued their battle for “Rookie Of The Year” honors. Niggli leads Hamblin by a slim 11 points, while Bishop trails Niggli by 110.
Other veterans planning to act as spoilers include Greg Bragg, who has proven to be a fierce competitor since taking over for Kiwi Alexander five events ago, popular Andy Ferris and Axel Walker, a hot-shoe from the State of Washington, who will make their initial SCRA appearance this season.
It all takes place at Kings Speedway with the first event scheduled for 7 pm. Call 559/587-1111 for additional information.
