PLACERVILLE, CA - AUGUST 11, 2007 – Brandon Davis of Rohnert Park extended his
current point leader in the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Car Series at
Placerville Speedway Saturday night. Davis entered the event as the point leader
of the series that competes for a shared championship between Silver Dollar
Speedway in Chico and Placerville Speedway and maintained it after leading every
lap of the 25-lap event.
Saturday’s event featured five divisions of racing at the El Dorado County
Fairground. Davis shared victory lane with pure stock racer Burney McClure of
Nevada City, Pro Stock winner Marek Bernert of Fair Oaks, Joey Hoover won the
Midget Lite feature event and Chris Rahe was declared the winner of the BCRA
Midget feature event that was shortened early due to multiple accidents and time
limitations.
In the Wingless Sprint car feature, Davis started fourth and overtook pole
sitter Jimmy Pettit of Chico, Cody Smith and Nick Green of Sacramento for the
lead. Once in front, Davis was challenged by defending series champion Bob
Newberry of Antioch with 12 laps complete. Davis used the high side of the track
while Newberry drove the lower to produce a nail biting battle for the lead into
the final laps of the race. At the finish line it was Davis followed by
Newberry, Matt Streeter of Lathrop, Kent Stephens of Modesto and Brad Virga of
El Dorado Hills.
In the Pure Stock feature event, McClure took the lead of the 20-lap event from
pole sitter Matt Tilford of Folsom. McClure led every lap of the event to drive
to his first win of the season after finishing second to his son Mike McClure on
several occasions. Tilford maintained the second position all the way to the
checkered flag ahead of Jason Englund of Citrus Heights, Mike McClure and Rick
Grunert of Woodland.
In the Pro Stock feature event, point leader Marek Bernert of Woodland took
command of the lead at the waving of the green flag. Bernert started on the
outside of the front row and took the lead from polesitter Jeff Arbogast Jr. of
Auburn. Once in front, Bernert went without serious challenge until the late
laps of the race when Arbogast closed in on the lead.
Bernert maintained his lead to the checkered flag followed by Arbogast. Dennis
Ahart of Cameron Park finished third ahead of Rancho Cordova’s Mike Moran and
Forryst Carnett of Placerville.
In the wingless midget lite division Saturday night, Doug Nunes of Kingsburg won
the 20-lap event. Nunes maintained the lead to the checkered flag despite
serious challenges by teammate Cameron Beard of Turlock. The two near identical
cars battled side by side for much of the event. At the checkered flag it was
Nunes being followed by Beard, Tyler Franklin of Roseville and Sam Corso of
Ripon.
The midget division had its share of adversities Saturday night. A combination
of accidents, spin outs and line ups that were delayed by driver’s lack of
attention results in an event that was scheduled for 25-laps being cancelled
prior to the halfway point due to curfew limitations. In the state of
California, any fairgrounds facility must have all operations complete by the
mandated curfew, including racing activity, public address systems and anything
considered audible.
Newcomer Chris Rahe was declared the winner of the feature event. Following the
event, all competitors were called to special meeting by the officials of the
Bay Cities Racing Association in regards to the events that took place.
Saturday’s event was just the second race of the season to be shortened due to
curfew. The first of the year was the opening night point race when a serious
accident required lengthy rescue efforts and forced promoter John Padjen to
cancel the race approximately 15 minutes prior to curfew.
Next Saturday is a big night for those that are little at Placerville Speedway.
The Mountain Democrat Newspaper will present the annual “Kids Night at
Placerville Speedway.” This gala affair gives youngster an opportunity to race
their bicycle’s by age group on the front stretch of the speedway during
intermission. The to three finishers in each age group will receive a trophy,
everyone who competes will receive a participation ribbon.
All kids under 12 will be admitted for free Saturday night and will have the
chance to win a BMX Bicycle purchased at Golden Spoke Bike Shop by the Jim Webb,
publisher of the Mountain Democrat Newspaper. In addition to the free admission
