(SEPTEMBER 10, PERRIS, CA) Just two weeks after breaking his collarbone in a violent flip at Perris Auto Speedway, Lucas Oil USAC/CRA point leader Tony Jones will be in action at the track this Saturday night, September 15th, in a show presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply. Saturday will be back to school night at The PAS and any student who shows their current school id at the ticket window will get in free. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
Now, what type of action the affable 37-year old from Norco, California will be involved in at the track is yet to be determined. If he has his way, Jones will be back in the driver’s seat of Mark Alexander’s silver #4 car. If he cannot get clearance from his doctor, Jones has accepted an offer from PAS to management to be on the microphone as a color analyst or an infield announcer for the night.
Jones flip was one of the most vicious seen at the track in recent years and it left the second-generation star with a broken collarbone. He had surgery to have the collarbone pinned last Friday and he wants to be back in the car this Saturday night. “I don’t want to hand this championship to anyone,” Jones said by telephone on Monday afternoon. “I am going to see the doctor and see if I can race. It is still swollen (his collarbone), but if I can get a motocross style setup (motocross shoulder pads) and pad them, it should be ok as long as I can keep the stitches in it.”
Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian hopes to see Jones on the track, but if not, he would welcome him to his track announcing team for Saturday. “Tony is a great personality and always has a lot to say. He would make a great addition to our announcing team for the night.” The promoter continued, “However, Tony is one of the most exciting racers in the country and if I had my choice and the fans had their choice, I think we would all rather see him in the car. Either way, we cannot lose”
Jones missed last Saturday’s race at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway due to the injury. However, defending Lucas Oil USAC/CRA champion Cory Kruseman (Ventura, California) parked his own car and accepted an offer to drive Jones normal ride and won the main event over “Showtime” Danny Sheridan of Santa Maria, California and Riverside, California’s “Dynamite” David Cardey.
Saturday’s back to school night festivities at The PAS will not require a book! However, the most exciting racing west of the Mississippi will be a lesson in itself and will include qualifying, 10 lap heat races, a 12 lap B-Main and wild 30-lap A-Main event.
