(AUGUST 28, PERRIS, CA) Two-time Budweiser Oval Nationals Champion and
current Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion Cory Kruseman will return to
action at Perris Auto Speedway for the first time since July 4th when Temecula
Valley Pipe & Supply presents the series in a show highlighted by a 40-lap
main event this Saturday night, September 1st. Spectator gates will open at 5:00
PM with racing at 7:00.
The popular Ventura, California star, who will celebrate his 37th birthday on
September 20th, has spent most of the last two months racing in the Midwest
competing first in the tough Indiana Sprint Week competition and then the TNT
Series. Despite being gone for the extended period and missing a few races
earlier in the year, Kruseman still sits seventh in the championship point
standings. His three main event victories is third best in the loop only behind
series points leader Tony Jones of Norco, California, who has five triumphs, and
Temecula, California’s Mike Spencer who has four wins. Of his three Lucas Oil
USAC/CRA wins this year, Kruseman has one victory at The PAS on June 9th. His
other wins came at King’s Speedway in Hanford, California and the Thunderbowl
Raceway in Tulare, California.
On Saturday night, Kruseman will be accompanied by young teammates Michael
Trimble of San Jose, California and Reading, California’s Alex Schutte, a
four-time IKF Carting champion.
In addition to Kruseman, another popular driver will be returning to The PAS on
Saturday night. Elk Grove, California’s Johnny Rodriguez, the current USAC
Western Midget point leader, will be back behind the wheel of the beautiful Mark
Priestley #7 Sprint Car. The affable Rodriguez, 31, holds a commanding 122-point
lead in the Western Midgets as that series begins in stretch run on September
7th at the Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, California. Rodriguez, who won
the USAC Western Midget title in 2004, saw his 2006 season cut short by an
injury suffered in a wild flip late in the B main of the Budweiser Oval
Nationals last November. In addition to his 2004 Western Midget championship,
Rodriguez, who is also known as “J-Rod,” won the 1999 Silver Dollar Speedway
Championship and was Rookie of the Year in the now defunct NARC Series in 1995.
Heading into Saturday’s race, Jones holds a massive 174-point lead over
Spencer in the championship standings. Those two have dominated the series for
nearly three months. The last time any other driver besides them has visited
victory circle was Kruseman’s June 9th PAS triumph. Since then, Jones and
Spencer have split the last six races with three wins each.
Saturday’s holiday weekend showdown at The PAS will include qualifying, 10 lap
heat races, a 12 lap B-Main and a crowd-pleasing, driver intense 40-lap A-Main
event.
