Marysville CA - April 25, 2007 --- The long awaited debut exhibition of the Extreme Bombers will be added to a monster 4-division program offered at Paul and Kathy Hawes' Marysville Raceway Park this Saturday. The event will also feature the opening point races for the MRP Street Stocks and the MRP MiniStocks. The Pacific Sprint Cars and the Wingless Sprint Cars will bring their Thunder & Lightning brand of competition into their 2nd point race of the season.
Jeremy Burt of Grass Valley is leading the points after round one in the winged Pacific Sprint Cars. His challengers will be formidable. 2004 champion Mike Monahan will be back to take his shots at Burt as will Marysville's fastest duet, Cort and Brandon Dozier. Their collective hammer down styles will make the winged cars seem like they are flying around the quick ¼ mile. Gridley's Shawn Amos showed a quick and agile style on opening night and it will be interesting to follow his progress this season. Sacramento's Tom Baker surprised everybody last time out with a fine ride into the top five.
The MRP Street Stocks will bring a host of racers to the green flag this Saturday. The new payoff structure and the aggressive, fender-rubbing dynamics of this division should be of paramount interest locally. Last year's champion, Phillip Shelby of Yuba City will be back to defend his title. It won't be an easy task. The father-daughter duo of Yuba City's Jerry Bartlett and daughter Heather are as strong a one-two punch as any. Heather and Jerry both bring championships into the contest. Marysville's Jeff Olschowka has already let it be known that he is one of the quickest of the contenders for the crown. Olschowka also brings championship technique to the show. Former MRP champion "Bad" Billy Knoop has also thrown down the gauntlet telling this observer that he'll challenge once again for the crown that narrowly escaped him last season.
Marysville's James Foster was the quickest thing around in the MRP MiniStocks as 2006 sailed into history. Foster will try to keep the momentum up as the Minis take to the speedway this Saturday. 2006 Champion Joel Guisti and a triple threat with the last name of Merritt will be right there to keep things interesting. Mike, Shaun and Damian will keep the heat on. Opening night will play host to a full field of the quick, sleek racers. Marysville's Robert Luster deserves a mention here. Luster has been in the hunt for the title two of the last three years. His luck has been among the worst of any driver at the raceway. Perhaps 2007 can be his year.
In the MRP Wingless Sprint Cars a couple of names jump out as serious contenders for the title. Of course, point leader and feature event winner Mark Hill of Yuba City would be the favorite at this early stage of the season. Hill will be tough to beat this year, as his driving skills and his ride appear to be in top-notch condition.
Right in there this year, however a third generation racer is starting to make some noise. Tim Sherman Jr. of Sacramento quietly slipped into contention during point race #1 and simply ran out of time as he chewed his way toward leader. Sherman had an impressive run in Chico last week that opened a few eyes. Sherman may well be the spoiler in this year's race to the title.
An extra added event will feature The Extreme Bombers. They are Stock Cars with passengers. Passengers have the brake pedal. You MUST hit things? No yellow flags?
If it sounds bizarre, you're right. Paul Hawes will be introducing an exhibition run of this new type of competition to the fans as an extra-added attraction this Saturday. The Extreme Bombers will top off the card with a, hopefully wild and woolly chase to the checkers…if anyone can make it to the checkers. It's unclear how many entrants will show on this opening night for the Extreme Bombers. It's been long awaited and much anticipated. It will be interesting to see how it all goes.
