JUNE 17, 2007 --- Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif., took the lead three
laps from the finish and went on to win his second Lucas Oil USAC/CRA sprint car
main event of the season Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway. Driving the Ron
Chaffin / Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply No. 50 Maxim, Spencer also earned
Hard Charger honors after starting the 30-lap race in the 14th position.
Like Spencer, Kerman, California’s Davey Pombo didn’t have the best
starting position, but was still able to drive Glenn Crossno’s ITI Perfromance
No. 38S Bullet to a runner-up finish after starting tenth.
Fast-time qualifier Rickie Gaunt, Torrance, Calif. started alongside Spencer
in the seventh row before driving his Nadine Gardner / Gardner Pipe &
Mechanical No. 94 Chalk to a third-place finish.
Rodney Argo, Long Beach, Calif., started on the outside of the front row next
to local favorite Danny Sheridan. Argo took the lead at the start and would lead
the first two laps of the event. Argo also put his Don Argo / Decore Plating No.
19 Stinger into the lead again on the 27th circuit before finally settling for a
fourth-place finish.
Jesse Mack of Visalia, Calif., was the best of the non-CRA regulars piloting
his Jerry Mack / Vanderweerd Construction No. 71M Maxim to a fifth-place finish.
Current USAC/CRA point leader Tony Jones of Norco, Calif., finished one spot
behind Mack in sixth.
