MARCH 12, 2007 --- Tony Jones continues to lead the 2007 USAC/CRA Sprint
Car Series standings after scoring a victory in last week’s “Las Vegas Dirt
Classic” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Jones is 19 points ahead of Mike Spencer
going into this Saturday night’s race at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz.
A 30-lap feature is on tap at the 1/2-mile dirt oval.
Spencer won three races during the 2006 USAC/CRA campaign and is piloting the
No. 50 Ron Chaffin Motorsports entry formerly campaigned by Damion Gardner, who
will compete for the USAC National title this year. In five Manzanita
appearances last year, Spencer notched four “top-10s.”
Jones, who won eight times in USAC/CRA competition during 2006, won Thursday
night’s 30-lapper at LVMS, leading the final 25 laps in his La Villa
Restaurant/Communication Innovations DRC. Rickie Gaunt led the first five laps
of the race. Jones was trailed by Gardner, J.J. Yeley, Darren Hagen and Scotty
Weir at the checkered flag, Yeley coming from 22nd starting spot!
Josh Wise, USAC’s 2006 National Sprint Car king, won Friday’s LVMS
30-lapper in the Keith Kunz Motorsports Bullet, passing Danny Sheridan on lap 22
and leading the rest of the way to beat Gaunt, Sheridan, Dustin Morgan and
Spencer.
Charles Davis Jr. escaped injury in the only LVMS flip, at the start of
Thursday’s feature.
Winners in USAC/CRA competition at Manzanita during 2006 included Wise and
Gardner (twice each), Levi Jones, Jeremy Sherman and Bud Kaeding. Ricky
Stenhouse Jr. scored an upset victory in the USAC/CRA race at Manzanita this
February.
