MARCH 3, 2007 --- Mike Spencer found the high groove Saturday night at
Perris Auto Speedway late in the 30-lap race, allowing him momentum enough to
take the lead and win his first USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series feature of 2007.
Spencer, driving for Ron Chaffin, was the first and last of
three leaders on the night, taking the lead for the final time on Lap 20 from
Rickie Gaunt and pulling away from the remainder of the field before the
checkered flag fell.
The victory solidified Spencer's first win for Chaffin's squad. It also marked
his fourth career USAC/CRA feature triumph.
Spencer, of Temecula, Calif., led the first lap before
perennial powerhouse Tony Jones, set to record his first feature victory of the
season, took over for the next six laps. Gaunt grabbed the lead on Lap 8 and
held the point until Lap 20, when Spencer swept past.
Rip Williams also passed Gaunt late in the race and
established a strong second-place finish ahead of Gaunt, Jones and last year's
National Sprint champ Josh Wise – who started 11th – and CRA titlist Damion
Gardner, who all staged a serious battle on the bottom side of the track near
the end of the race. Wise finally ended third, trailed by Gaunt and Jones.
Gardner finished the night sixth.
Scotty Weir earned his second straight Hard Charger Award
after coming from 19th to seventh.
Jimmy Crawford kicked off the evening in qualifying by
posting a fast time of 17.030 seconds.
The series returns to action Wednesday and Thursday at The
Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wise and J.J. Yeley return to their
roots after moving to Stock cars over the last three years.
