Welcome Sprint Fans,

I could not think of a better way to start off than an interview with one of
the founders and the lady at the helm of Florida’s Wingless Sprint Group
“Carla Rudolph”.
Here in her words is how it all started.
“In the Beginning”
In February of 2002 my husband Michael (Rudolph) decided he just couldn’t
afford to race sprint cars any more. Racing and times had changed and finances
were tight for everyone, the expense of keeping up with the Winged Sprint Cars
had skyrocketed and was just out of reach. When Michael began his hobby in
racing many years ago along side his father George, people built, worked on
their own cars, fabricated their own parts and built their own motors. In time
this ethic had all fallen by the wayside. Michael continued on, he was one of
the lucky ones, he had a wife and daughter who fully supported his hobby and
passion, at times we probably liked it even more than he did.
One afternoon Michael was at a Larry Moyer’s shop talking about all he had
accomplished in his racing career and why he was going to have to throw in the
towel for a couple of years while he regrouped. Larry asked what actually was
the biggest expense to running a sprint car? Michael’s reply was simply two
words. “Motors and Tires“. You see Michael and many others in the similar
financial situation were running Sprint Cars with a wing. And to put it simply
as Michael says “It takes a whole lot more motor, money and tires with a
wing than it does without one.” They continued to discuss several different
options. Michael called and asked me to come up to the shop, that he and his
friends wanted to discuss a business proposition with me. When I arrived at
the shop they thought they had it all figured out, except for one little
thing. I asked, who would actually plan, organize and run the series? Suddenly
I noticed everyone was pointing fingers and looking at me.
After some further discussion I agreed to start the series with the help of
Larry who in-turn brought Bobby Diehl on board as a series promoter.. Due to
personal business demands Larry faded away after about a year. At this point
in time Bobby continued on board and we adopted the name FAST SPRINTS. This
was to coincide with other series Bobby was promoting. It was a very slow
start for all of us, tracks didn’t really want to book a new, unproven
series with no track record so to speak. Despite a lot of initial rejection we
kept on trying. Finally a track (Auburndale) offered to run us once a month.
That was great, we had kind of a home track. For a while, It was all good. The
driver, car count and fan base began to grow and we were putting on what we
deemed to be mildly successful races. We learned that there was indeed a lot
of traditional (non-wing) sprint car people out there. Like a lot of good
things for one reason or another they often come to an end. The track
management and Bobby had their differences. Not that either one was totally
right or wrong. In a lot of cases, they just weren’t on the same page or did
not have the same goals and objectives. After much thinking and discussion it
was mutually agreed that Bobby and the club end their business relationship.
With a lot of thought I agreed to change the name of the series to Central
Florida Wingless Sprint Car Association. I soon realized I needed help
and an announcer would help to boost the fans at the tracks. Kenny Sands
stepped up and offered to help. He has been our announcer ever since and
officially became a partner in CFWSCA In 2006 we formed a 5 member Board of
Directors along with additional support people We now have our own Announcer,
Official Push Truck, Tech and Safety Officials. Michael even created a Racing
Simulator we often take to tracks, car shows and such. We have lots of new
help with marketing, a newsletter and a new website in the works. All of which
we hope will create new and additional awareness not only for our club but all
Florida sprint cars. For 2007 we have a growing list of versatile drivers,
both seasoned veterans and young guns and Michael has now become a full time
promoter for the series. Looking back, I have to smile. In some ways it seems
like only a short while ago Michael called me from the shop with his so called
proposition, I am proud of what we have accomplished in 4 years. Building a
series of any kind from scratch is a long and winding road. Together we have
come a long way but we still have a long way to go. One thing I can say is Central
Florida Wingless Sprints are not going away. We are in it for the long
haul.
