TULSA, Okla. (October 8, 2007) – The stars of the wingless world will be shining brightly this weekend with the inaugural running of the Parker Store ASCS Western World Non-Wing Championship atop Manzanita Speedway's ½-mile clay oval this Friday and Saturday night.
A stellar field of nearly 50 competitors are set to battle it out for an unprecedented wingless 360-ci Sprint Car purse of over $30,000 over the two nights, with Saturday night's Parker Store ASCS Western World Championship winner pocketing $5,000.
The two-night event, with both nights awarding American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region, will feature the use of the popular Sprint Bandits format of heat races and qualifying races to set feature lineups.
Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, and Charles Davis, Jr., of Buckeye, AZ, have combined to monopolize ASCS Canyon Region victory lane in 2007, with the talented duo netting 15 of 16 feature wins.
Sherman has piled up eleven wins this season, with Davis snaring four triumphs. Three of Davis' wins have come in the last five events. The only other driver to break into ASCS Canyon Region victory lane is youngster Chad Boat, who scored a win at Casa Grande on May 12.
In five ASCS Canyon Region events atop Manzanita Speedway's ½-mile oval this year, Sherman has reached victory lane on four occasions with Davis taking top honors in the other event.
Sherman and Davis will be tested this weekend however, with top invaders expected to vie for victory honors including Jon Stanbrough, Jesse Hockett, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Casey Shuman and the red-hot Robert Ballou.
With just two events remaining following this weekend's ASCS Western World Championships Sherman holds a 151-point lead over Davis in the ASCS Canyon Region championship points race.
Glendale's Bob Ream, Jr., a past Arizona state champion, is currently third in points, with Mike Leslie of Litchfield Park and Peoria's Josh Pelkey rounding out the top five.
The balance of the current top-ten in the highly competitive ASCS Canyon Region includes Shon Deskins (Waddell, AZ), Seainn Hendricsen (Mesa, AZ), Bernie Smith (Glendale, AZ), Andrew Reinbold (Chandler, AZ) and Mike Martin (Yuma, AZ).
Both nights of the Parker Store ASCS Western World Non-Wing Championship atop Manzanita Speedway's ½-mile clay oval are set to fire off at 7:30 p.m.
Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.
