ASCS Canyon Region at Manzanita on Saturday
by Lonnie Wheatley

TULSA, Okla. (August 27, 2007) – The wingless forces of the American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region will celebrate the Labor Day holiday weekend by taking to Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval in Phoenix, AZ, on Saturday night.

It marks the series fifth outing of the season atop Manzanita's smaller oval and first since July 3.

Current series points leader Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, has topped all four previous outings on the 1/3-mile.

And until this past Saturday night, "The Shermanator" had been undefeated on the big ½-mile as well. But with victory within reach, a depleted fuel cell allowed "Chargin'" Charles Davis, Jr., to snare the win on the final round and put a stop to Sherman's Manzanita domination.

Sherman, with nine overall feature wins in 12 ASCS Canyon Region events this year, will try to get a new streak started on Saturday night as he tried to build upon his 143-point lead over Glendale's Bob Ream, Jr.

While Sherman's lead is substantial, the point battle behind him remains intense with Ream just eight points ahead of Peoria's Josh Pelkey. Another eight points back in fourth is Davis, who continues to make up ground after missing an early season event.

Just four more points back in fifth and only 20 points out of second is Litchfield Park's Mike Leslie, with Andrew Reinbold (Chandler), Bernie Smith (Glendale), Seainn Hendricsen (Mesa), Mike Martin (Yuma) and Shon Deskins (Waddell) rounding out the current top ten.

Just outside of the top ten are 16-year-old Michael Colegrove (Glendale), 18-year-old rookie shoe Jeremy Reagles (Mesa), Chris Bonneau (Glendale), Bobby Taylor (Tucson), 16-year-old Nick Aiuto (Camp Verde) and Justin Fisher.

Once again, $50 certificates will be awarded to each of the heat race winners, with Racing Optics sponsoring heat race one, Parker Store sponsoring heat race two, Kenz & Leslie/BG Chemicals sponsoring heat race three and Sunoco sponsoring heat race four. Arizona Race Mart sponsors the Pole Dash, while Sunoco will also award a $50 certificate to each "B" Main winner in ASCS Canyon Region action this year.

Saturday's action goes green at 8:00 p.m.

Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.

The ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in wingless Sprint Car racing to Arizona in 2007 with a slate of 24 events. In addition to Manzanita Speedway, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series, with the series set to sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
