TULSA, Okla. (August 21, 2007) – The wingless troops of the American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region will headline this weekend's double-header of racing action at the famed Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, AZ, as the track celebrates its 56th Anniversary.
The series will take to the fabled half-mile clay oval on both Friday night and Saturday night, with both cards going green at 8:00 p.m.
It will mark the first event at Manzanita Speedway under new track owners Mel and Bobby Martin, who took over ownership of the facility last week.
The top twelve in owner's points will be inverted in a six-lap dash, with the balance of the field running a 10-lap qualifying race line up by pill draw. The weekend will culminate with a 30-lap feature event.
As the series returns to action, Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, will try to continue the form that he has carried through the opening eleven events of the season to amass 135 point lead in the championship points chase.
Sherman has racked up nine wins in eleven events, including seven triumphs in as many events at Manzanita Speedway. Three of those victories have come atop the ½-mile oval, with the other four on the 1/3-mile.
While Sherman holds a commanding lead, the battle for position behind him is an intense one with Bob Ream, Jr., just one point ahead of Mike Leslie in the battle for second. Also in the tightly-packed points race are Josh Pelkey, Bernie Smith, Charles Davis, Jr., Seainn Hendricsen and Andrew Reinbold, with only 36 markers separating second from eighth.
Mike Martin enters Saturday's event ninth in points, just another 21 points back, with Shon Deskins rounding out the current top ten.
Just outside the top ten are Michael Colegrove, Jeremy Reagles, Chris Bonneau, Bobby Taylor, Nick Aiuto, Justin Fisher and Bruce St. James.
Several ASCS Canyon Region racers stayed sharp over the past week by competing in the Third Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing throughout Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas, including Charles Davis, Jr., Chad Boat, R.J. Johnson and Mike Leslie. Davis and Boat both made the cut for four of five feature events with the highly competitive series, with Johnson and Leslie each making three feature starts.
Once again, $50 certificates will be awarded to each of the heat race winners, with Racing Optics sponsoring heat race one, Parker Store sponsoring heat race two, Kenz & Leslie/BG Chemicals sponsoring heat race three and Sunoco sponsoring heat race four. Arizona Race Mart sponsors the Pole Dash, while Sunoco will also award a $50 certificate to each "B" Main winner in ASCS Canyon Region action this year.
Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.
The ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in wingless Sprint Car racing to Arizona in 2007 with a slate of 24 events. In addition to Manzanita Speedway, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.
The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series, with the series set to sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
