ASCS Canyon Region Tackles Manzanita on Saturday

by Lonnie Wheatley

TULSA, Okla. (June 26, 2007) – An intriguing points race for the American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region will continue to unfold as the series takes to Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval this Saturday night.

While Jeremy Sherman still holds a healthy 91-point lead after suffering engine woes in Saturday night's Casa Grande event, a mere 40 points separate the next eight drivers in a wild battle for position among the top ten.

With nine events in the books thus far, including five at Manzanita, Sherman has topped seven feature events to amass his point lead.  Along the way, Sherman has been perfect at Manzanita, topping three events on the ½-mile and two features on the 1/3-mile.

But after losing an engine during heat race action this past weekend, Sherman's room for error has diminished.  And another like occurrence could find a wolfpack of contenders nipping at Sherman's heels.

Following Saturday night's event at Casa Grande, Bob Ream, Jr., leapfrogged from fifth to second in points with his fifth top-five finish of the season.

Bernie Smith and Mike Leslie are currently tied for third, with Charles Davis, Jr., climbing to fifth after notching his first series win of the year.

The current top ten in ASCS Canyon Region points is as follows:  1. Jeremy Sherman (Surprise, AZ) 1,271, 2. Bob Ream, Jr. (Glendale, AZ) 1,180, 3. (tie) Bernie Smith (Glendale, AZ) and Mike Leslie (Litchfield Park, AZ) 1,174, 5. Charles Davis, Jr. (Buckeye, AZ) 1,156, 6. Seainn Hendricsen (Mesa, AZ) 1,148, 7. Shon Deskins (Waddell, AZ) 1,147, 8. Andrew Reinbold (Chandler, Az) 1,140, 9. Josh Pelkey (Peoria, AZ) 1,140, 10. Mike Martin (Yuma, AZ) 1,099.

Saturday's event will also be a tribute to Fifty Years of Windy McDonald, the voice of Manzanita Speedway, a tribute that was originally scheduled for April 28 but delayed due to inclement weather.

Once again, $50 certificates will be awarded to each of the heat race winners, with Racing Optics sponsoring heat race one, Parker Store sponsoring heat race two, Kenz & Leslie/BG Chemicals sponsoring heat race three and Sunoco sponsoring heat race four.  Arizona Race Mart sponsors the Pole Dash, while Sunoco will also award a $50 certificate to each "B" Main winner in ASCS Canyon Region action this year.

Saturday's racing action goes green at 8:00 p.m.

The ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in wingless Sprint Car racing to Arizona in 2007 with a slate of 24 events.  In addition to Manzanita Speedway, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series, with the series set to sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
