ASCS Breaks New Ground with Canyon Region
by Lonnie Wheatley
TULSA, Okla. (January 28, 2007) – As the 2007 racing season cranks into high gear, the American Sprint Car Series continues to break new ground. And in more than one sense of the term in this case, as the series has just announced the addition of the ASCS Canyon Region.

The inception of the Arizona-based ASCS Canyon Region is new territory for the American Sprint Car Series not only in that it marks the first Regional series west of the Rocky Mountains, but it will also be the first Regional series to feature non-wing Sprint Car racing.

The ASCS Canyon Region extends the number of ASCS Regions throughout the country to thirteen in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series. Other new Regions for the American Sprint Car Series in 2007 include the Coastal, Mid-Atlantic and Rebel Regions.

The ASCS Canyon Region will be under the guidance of Ron Shuman, who will serve as Race Director. "I've been in the race game for over 30 years, so I've kind of enjoyed having my weekends free the last couple of years. But the ASCS is coming to Arizona for the right reasons so I look forward to being a part of it," Shuman explained.

"ASCS in Arizona will be good for everybody, the tracks, the drivers and the fans," Shuman went on to say. "The national exposure the drivers will get with the ASCS and the opportunities that come along with that, it can't be anything but a plus for every one of them. We can finally get these guys some exposure that they've been needing."

The inaugural ASCS Canyon Region slate will consist of approximately 24 events. A majority of events will be at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, with other tracks hosting the series including Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande and USA Race Park in Tucson.

Manzanita Speedway is set to host the series season opener on March 10.

Manzanita Speedway promoter Dennis Woods is enthused about the ASCS Canyon Region competing at the famed Phoenix oval. "We're really excited about it, everybody has a tremendous amount of respect for Emmett Hahn and the American Sprint Car Series and what they've done for Sprint Car racing. No one can doubt their abilities in the sport."

"We have some of the best Sprint Cars in the world right here in Arizona and some of the best drivers, and now under the ASCS banner a lot more people will come to realize just how good the Sprint Car racing is out here. It will give our racers a lot of opportunities that they haven't had in the past."

With the addition of the ASCS Canyon Region, the American Sprint Car Series will sanction well over 250 races at more than 100 different tracks throughout the United States as well as Canada in 2007, the 16th year of ASCS competition.
