September 18, 2006 –Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif. has 21 career victories in USAC’s tough Western Sprint Car Series and a victory in Saturday’s USAC/CASA 50-lapper at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif. would extend his all-time leading total. He can tie the all-time single-season series record of seven wins if he takes Saturday’s main event.
Michael Lewis won seven Western Sprint races in 2005 and 2004 and Bud Kaeding was the first to accomplish the feat in 1999.
Hunt has a 107-point lead over Mike Murgoitio in the standings enroute to what would be a fifth USAC driving championship. Only seven drivers in USAC history have more titles.
Murgoitio could be Tony’s biggest threat for victory this Saturday, though, having won at Shasta in July. Defending series champion Kody Swanson ranks third in the current standings.
This weekend’s Shasta program is a USAC “doubleheader,” also featuring the USAC/BCRA Midgets, who have a 30-lap feature on tap.
