(Oxnard, CA 4/4/06)
Ventura Raceway will open its 2006 racing season on Saturday April 8, at
its Ventura County Fairgrounds racing facility, conveniently located just off
the 101 freeway in Ventura. On that
night Ventura Racing Association, VRA will showcase four adult classes and one
new, very special, junior class of racing. We are hoping for better weather than
the rain and cold that has caused us to cancel the first four events of the new
season.
Headlining the night will be the VRA 360 Sprint Cars.
These high powered racing machines hit speeds of 75 mph on Ventura’s
tight 1/5 mile clay oval. All
the top VRA 360 drivers will be there including Greg Taylor, past champion Kevin
Kierce, Chris Wakim, Steve Conrad, Rob Kershaw, Luis Espinoza, Tom Hendrick, and
a host of other fine drivers. Last
year’s champion, Blake Miller, has moved up to USAC/CRA 4110’s this year so
the championship will be wide open. This
class will keep you on the edge of your seats as they race around Ventura’s
oval track only inches apart lap after lap.
USAC Midgets will join the VRA Sprints Saturday night for
the first of their five scheduled visits to Ventura this year.
Led by 2005 Western States Champion Jerome Rodella, this exciting class
of open wheel racing always provides great racing on Ventura’s tight oval
track. Also scheduled to compete is
USAC National Midget star Michael Lewis. Tyler Brown, Ryan Kaplan, Matt
Mitchell, Shannon McQueen and lead the rest of the Western States Midget Stars
to Ventura.
The third class that will be racing Saturday will be the
VRA/USAC Ford Focus Midgets. A spec
Ford Focus four cylinder-racing engine powers this self-starting midget racing
cars. They always put on a great
show for the fans. Bobby Michnowicz
leads the points coming to Ventura this weekend.
He is being challenged by Chris Veach, Jet Davison, Nick Carlson and the
rest of the Focus field to see who will be the 2006 season champion.
As a part of the Ford Focus Division, we will begin our new
VRA Junior Ford Focus program for drivers 13-16. These drivers will drive the same cars as the adult series
with the exception that they will run with restricted injector stacks to lower
the horsepower and allow slower speeds for the junior drivers.
Also on tap that night will be the opening round of the VRA
Pony Stock class. This entry-level
class provides fans great racing thrills. Pony
Stocks are small four cylinder American and foreign coupes and sedans.
2005 Champion Mike Frazier has moved up to IMCA Modifieds for 2006,
opening the championship battle to the rest of the Pony Stock field. This class
provides a beginning class for racers who want to move up to faster cars in the
future. Jim Evans, Jack Hoyt and two-time class runner-up Andrew
Greiman are among the stars to watch in this division.
Racing gets under way at 5:00pm with USAC Midget
qualifications. Pit gates open at
12:00 noon. Front gates open at 3:30pm. Admission
prices are: Adults: $14.00, Seniors (55 & older), Military and Juniors:
$11.00, Children 7-12: $5.00 and kids 6 and under free.
