(Oxnard, CA 3/28/06) Ventura Raceway, once again, will try to open its
2006 racing season this Saturday April 1, at 5:00pm, at its Ventura County
Fairgrounds racing facility, conveniently located just off the 101 freeway in
Ventura. After getting everyone
into the pits last weekend, wet grounds and rain caused us to end the night
before racing began. We are hoping
for better luck this weekend. On
Saturday night Ventura Racing Association, VRA, will showcase four adult classes
and two new very special junior class of racing.
Headlining the
night will be the VRA 360 Sprint Cars. These
360 cubic inch V-8 powered racing machines hit speeds of 75 mph on Ventura’s
tight 1/5-mile clay oval. All
the top VRA 360 drivers will be there including Greg Taylor, past champion Kevin
Kierce, Chris Wakim, Steve Conrad, Rob Kershaw, Luis Espinoza and a host of
other fine drivers. Last
year’s champion, Blake Miller, has moved up to USAC/CRA 410’s this year so
the championship will be wide open. This
class will keep you on the edge of your seats as they race around Ventura’s
oval track only inches apart lap after lap.
VRA Senior
Sprints are also making their 2006 debut Saturday night as Wiley Miller leads
the over 45-year-old set back to the track.
He will be going for his fourth series championship this year.
Out to see that that doesn’t happen will be past champions Ron Bach,
Jim Porter, Danny Miller and the rest of the outstanding drivers who make up
this fine class. The only
difference in this class from the regular VRA 360 Sprint Class is that all the
drivers in this class are over 45 years of age.
Also on tap Saturday night will be the opening round of the two VRA Dwarf
Car divisions. These two classes
always provide fans great racing thrills. The Dwarf Cars race in two divisions,
Pros and Seniors. These downsized
1930’s style sedans and trucks, powered by 1100-1200 cc motorcycle engines
race hard and fast. Last year’s
Pro Division Champion Brian Saxton will be back to try to take another
championship.
The IMCA
Modified Class is also here Saturday night for their first competition of the
new season. This high-powered V-8
open wheel stock car class always thrills the crowd with fast and furious
action. 2005 Champion Donald
Houghton will be back to defend his championship against the rest of the IMCA
drivers, including Jack Parker, Brad Prows, Joe Weaver and many other fine
competitors.
The final two
classes racing on Saturday are making their competitive debut at Ventura.
Mini Dwarfs, for drivers 5-12 years old and Junior Midgets, for drivers
11-16 years old will compete for the first time. These classes will compete on a smaller infield track.
Mini Dwarfs resemble their larger full size dwarf car counterparts, but
are powered by 5hp engines. This
allows younger children to get racing experience and develop their skill that
will lead them to higher and faster classes as they grow older.
The Junior Midgets are a faster open wheeled car that looks like small
sprint car. They are powered by 15
hp engines giving them good racing speeds on the short infield track.
Please note
that Junior class racing gets under way at 3:30pm with the regular VRA Class
racing getting under way at 5:00pm. Our
new front gate opening time of 3:30pm allows those wishing to watch the junior
division heats to be in attendance as their competition begins.
Admission prices are: Adults: $14.00, Seniors, Military and Juniors:
$11.00, Children 7-12: $5.00 and kids 6 and under free.
