Ventura Raceway Opens 2006 Season Saturday
|
(Oxnard, CA 3/14/06) Ventura Raceway will open its 2006 racing season on
Saturday March 18 at its Ventura County Fairgrounds racing facility,
conveniently located just off the 101 freeway in Ventura. On that night Ventura
Racing Association, VRA will showcase four adult classes and one new very
special junior class of racing. We are hoping for better weather than the rain
and cold that caused us to cancel last week's opening night.
Headlining the night will be the VRA 360 Sprint Cars. These high powered racing
machines hit speeds of 75 mph on Ventura's tight 1/5 mile clay oval. All the top
VRA 360 drivers will be there including Greg Taylor, past champion Kevin Kierce,
Chris Wakim, Steve Conrad, Rob Kershaw, Luis Espinoza and a host of other fine
drivers. Last year's champion, Blake Miller, has moved up to USAC/CRA 410s
this year so the championship will be wide open. This class will keep you on the
edge of your seats as they race around Ventura's oval track only inches apart,
lap after lap.
VRA Senior Sprints are also making their 2006 debut this Saturday night as Wiley
Miller leads the over 45-year-old set back to the track. He will be going for
his fourth series championship this year. Out to see that that doesn't happen
will be past champions Ron Bach, Jim Porter and the rest of the outstanding
drivers who make up this fine class. The only difference in this class from the
regular VRA 360 Sprint Class is that all the drivers in this class are over 45
years of age.
The fourth class that will be racing Saturday will be the VRA/USAC Ford Focus
Midgets. A spec Ford Focus four cylinder-racing engine powers these
self-starting midget racing cars. They always put on a great show for the fans.
As a part of the Ford Focus Division, we will begin our new VRA Junior Ford
Focus program for drivers 13-16. These drivers will drive the same cars as the
adult series with the exception that they will run with restricted injector
stacks to lower the horsepower and allow slower speeds for the junior drivers.
The IMCA Modifieds are also back Saturday night. This high-powered V-8 open
wheel stock car class always thrills the crowd with fast and furious action.
2005 Champion Donald Houghton will be back to defend his championship against
the rest of the IMCA drivers, including Jack Parker, Brad Prows, Joe Weaver and
many other fine competitors..
Racing gets under way at 5:00pm with front gates opening at 4:00pm. Admission
prices are: Adults: $14.00, Seniors, Military and Juniors: $11.00, Children
7-12: $5.00 and kids 6 and under free.
