October 2, 2006...Saturday’s 36th running of the “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track continues an American short-track racing tradition and concludes a two-night program of racing on one of America’s most exciting half-mile dirt ovals. A 20-lap feature caps Friday’s prelims and a 30-lapper concludes Saturday’s events.
This weekend’s “Fall Harvest Tony Hulman Classic” events will be pivotal in the battle for USAC’s 2006 National Sprint Car Championship as teammates Josh Wise and defending series champion Levi Jones are separated by only 82 points. A total of 142 points are available at Terre Haute. Jones became the third youngest “Tony Hulman Classic” winner in history last year. J.J. Yeley, who won in 1997 at age 21, was the youngest.
Joining Jones in this weekend’s field will be former “Tony Hulman Classic” champs Dave Darland (1993), Jay Drake (2000), Tracy Hines (2001) and Jon Stanbrough (2002).
This weekend’s races will be the first for the USAC Sprint Cars at Terre Haute this season. Two previously-scheduled events were weathered out.
The “Tony Hulman Classic” tradition began in 1971 and when Terre Haute closed in 1988 it moved to Indianapolis (at what is now O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis). It returned to Terre Haute in 1992 and has remained there since. Cary Faas is the only three-time winner of the storied race, while Steve Butler is the only driver to post wins on both dirt and pavement, winning at Terre Haute in 1987 and Indianapolis in 1988. Those wins stand as the only back-to-back victories in race history!
