September 25, 2006...Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track’s annual “Fall Harvest Classic” USAC Sprint Car program is set for Oct. 6-7 and concludes with Saturday night’s 36th annual running of the prestigious “Tony Hulman Classic.”
Only one driver in “Tony Hulman Classic” history has won it back-to-back. That was Steve Butler, who won it at Terre Haute in 1987, then at what was then Indianapolis Raceway Park, which hosted the 1998 running. Defending champion Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. currently ranks second in the series standings, 82 behind teammate Josh Wise.
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., the 2001 “Tony Hulman Classic” winner, claimed a $25,000 first-place check for his victory in the Mopar Thunder @ The 4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. The race was held in the wee hours of Sunday morning, following rain delays Saturday night. Hines and his Kroger-Tide/Bounty-Pringles F-5/Mopar led all 30 laps to beat Wise, Brady Bacon, Dave Darland and Mat Neely.
Jerry Coons Jr., who will seek his initial “Tony Hulman Classic” victory at Terre Haute, set a new track qualifying record at Eldora Friday.
