May 16, 2006...The USAC National Sprint Car Series makes its North Carolina pavement debut Sunday night in Concord Motorsports Park’s “Mopar All-Star Showdown.” The program also features the USAC National Midget Car Series.
Josh Wise of Riverside, Calif. leads the series standings, piloting a Mopar/Bass Pro Shops entry for Tony Stewart Racing. Teammate Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. currently ranks third in the 2006 standings. Wise won last year’s USAC National Midget title and Jones is the defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion.
Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif., winner of last year’s USAC Sprint race at The Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway is 18 points behind Wise and five ahead of Jones.
A 50-lap feature is slated for each series on the 1/2-mile paved oval following complete preliminaries.
Postponement of last weekend’s two scheduled races puts a historic spotlight on the Concord oval, which could witness USAC’s ninth consecutive different Sprint race winner in nine 2006 events! The all-time record is eight, which was recently tied. Ironically none of the top three in the standings have won yet this season!
Race winners so far have included Jerry Coons Jr., Dave Darland, Jon Stanbrough, Bryan Clauson, Shane Cottle, Rob Chaney, Darren Hagen and Justin Marvel.
USAC and track officials are working to try to reschedule last Saturday’s “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and Sunday’s night race at the Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway. New dates will be announced when they become firm.
