20 USAC CARS HEADED EAST FOR 2 SPRINT DATES |

A strong contingent of USAC’s “Thunder & Lightning” National Sprint Car stars will head East this weekend for landmark events in the series. Friday night’s race at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. is the first ever at that 1/2-mile dirt oval and the first in the Keystone State since a 1999 race at Franklin. Saturday night’s race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Speedway is also the first at that 1/ 2-mile dirt oval and the first in the Empire state in more than a quarter-century. Greg Leffler won the last USAC Sprint race in New York at the Hamburg Fairgrounds in 1978. Point leaders Josh Wise of Riverside, Calif. and Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. head the contingent of travelers, Jones the defending series champion and Wise last year’s USAC National Midget Champion. USAC/CRA Sprint Car point leader Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif. is also among those heading East as are USAC Triple Crown Champion Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind., 2005 “Rookie of the Year” Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. and “Most Improved Driver” Mat Neely of Robinson, Ill. Throw in former series champion Jay Drake of Brownsburg, Ind., former Western Sprint Champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif., newly-crowned Border Wars titlist Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. and 16-year-old phenom Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Ind. and you have a stellar field of competitors, not to mention Pennsylvania’s own John Heydenreich of Bloomsburg. Clauson is the youngest winner of a USAC National Sprint and Midget feature, winning the “Rich Vogler Classic” Sprint race at the famed Winchester (Ind.) Speedway April 23. A 30-lap feature caps the program of racing at both Eastern facilities, opening what is hoped to be an annual Eastern trek for the USAC National Sprint Car Series. Shane Cottle of Kokomo, Ind. and Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio scored USAC Sprint Car victories in this past weekend’s “Border Wars XII” events at Gas City, Ind. and Rossburg, Ohio respectively. Cottle led the final 17 laps at Gas City I-69 Speedway in his Crume-Evans Insurance/RG Enterprises Chalk/RMP after passing Bart Grider on lap 14. Jon Stanbrough, Coons, Kruseman and Critter Malone rounded out the “top-five.” Chaney won Saturday’s 30-lapper at Eldora Speedway in his K & N Filters/Sander Engineering Stevenson/Kistler, passing early leader Wise on lap 24. Wise took second ahead of Kaeding, Coons and Stanbrough. Coons emerged as the two-race “Border Wars XII” champion. Dickie Gaines of Mitchell, Ind. suffered a fractured right arm and pelvis fracture in an accident at Eldora, while Drake, also involved in the Eldora accident, was treated for a bruised back and released.
