April 17, 2006 –
The “City of Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals” and the “Rich Vogler Classic” will showcase USAC’s National Sprint Car Series in back-to-back dirt and pavement races this weekend as the 2006 USAC schedule accelerates to full speed ahead. Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway hosts Saturday night’s race on the 1/4-mile dirt, while Winchester (Ind.) Speedway’s 1/2-mile paved oval is Sunday afternoon’s venue.
Two-time series champion Dave Darland, fresh from his April 9 “Glen Niebel Classic” victory at Anderson, Ind., leads the series into this weekend’s events, holding a 24-point edge over Tracy Hines. USAC National Midget and Sprint Car Champions Josh Wise and Levi Jones, teammates for Tony Stewart Racing, rank third and fourth respectively in the latest standings.
Darland, of Lincon, Ind., is the defending champion of Winchester’s “Rich Vogler Classic,” while Dickie Gaines of Mitchell, Ind. won last year’s only race at the Lawrenceburg oval.
J.J. Yeley holds the one-lap qualifying record at Lawrenceburg at 11.797 seconds, set in 2003. Dave Steele owns Winchester’s one-lap mark of 14.026 (128.333 mph), set in 2002.
Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif., currently leading the USAC/CRA Sprint Car standings, will return for Saturday’s Lawrenceburg race as a teammate to Bryan Clauson. Kruseman is a former Indiana Sprint Week Champion but none of his dozen Indiana Sprint Week victories have come at Lawrenceburg,
Jerry Coons Jr., who won the 2006 USAC Sprint Car opener at Rossburg, Ohio, is also slated to compete this weekend for USAC’s winningest Sprint car team, Dynamics, Inc.
